642-1 - What's the story?

I've seen a few threads talking about the newly released no locks and read some rumors as to the reason for the release - the most common being an overrun production of 3000 units for a foreign order. What's the real story behind the re-release of these and is this something we should expect to continue to see from S&W with other revolver models?

I've heard three different stories.
1. Over-run/cancelled foreign order.
2. Special run of the most popular model to satisfy all the no-lock fans and judge the market.
3. Parts clean out of the warehouse.

I also heard there were 4k now its only 3k.

Don't know the story but I picked one up today at my dealer, $400.
Smith is very proud of the 'no lock' as it is clearly stated on the label and the dealer was making a bid deal out of it as well.
MIM trigger but I can live with that as there is no lock.
I said when they made a no lock I'd buy one. Now have this one and the new Model 40.
Keep 'em coming.

A local dealer quoted me a price of $429, but they didn't even have them yet. He said they'd be in later this week or next.

I picked mine up Friday for $420 plus tax.

Source? Care to share how you know this information?

So does anyone actually have anything more substantial than internet rumors to validate the claim that 'The lock is on the way out.'?

I'm kinda surprised nobody else had bothered calling S&W for themselves to find out why, so I decided to pick up the phone and do it myself.

While the guy that I spoke with did not seem to be the most knowledgable on the subject (he kept referring to it as the 442, not the 642), what he said was that RSR Group (a major firearms distributor) put in a special order from S&W for 4000 of the 642s wihtout the lock and that they (RSR) would have exclusive rights to distribute these models. He did not know if there would be any other models produced without the lock.

Perhaps he may have slipped about the 442, who knows.

On the S&W website under "new products" they have a limited run on the "Second Amendment" 442 engraved edition. I emailed S&W last week regarding lock or no lock. Email reply stated these 442's come with the lock.

"642 with no lock" is a special production run is my best guess. Maybe S&W will receive so many positive "no lock" comments they'll wake up.

I oicked mine up yesterday. Brand new 642 with no lock.

Is that gun a 642? It looks a heck of a lot like a stainless gun, like the 640.

Scratch that post, when my browser window refreshed, the gun looks like a 642, weird.

I posted the wrong pic. the first time. Now edited with correct pic. (and spelling!).

Lipsey's (another national distributor) also has
some, although their wholesale price is higher than that of RSR. I have heard the distribution is 3000 to RSR and 1000 to Lipsey's but that is all conjecture.

I know it is not an RSR "exclusive".

I just got four in today from RSR and they are, indeed, 642-1s. My cash price on them is $405 plus tax.

We can only hope this is the first step to S&W backing off of the IL abomination and maybe this will give them a way to save face and re-introduce non-lock models.

They are marked with a -1 because the lock versions are the -2 models. (like said above) There is a difference from the ones made in in 2001 though, the serial numbers are DCM and not CAx like the older ones. also, on the box label right next to the serial number is the number 8192 which means they were manufactured on the 192nd day of 2008. I think these 4000 frames were made new for this run rather than being leftovers. If they had all those frames left they would have been using them to repair older M642's that were sent in instead of replacing them with M642-2 revolvers under warrantee.

In any case, I also got mine before they all sell out!
