I noticed a film peeling on one of my 642's the other is fine. Not sure what it could be but it really doesn't show on a photo. anyone heard of some finish problems I will call Smith on Monday but thought I would put it out there.

That problem seems to come up now and then on this forum. S&W should make it right if you can't live with it.

My older 642s (-1) seem to have more rugged clear coat. The newest one (not sure of dash since I sold it because of finish & lock) had clearcoat replaced twice by S&W.

The clear-coat is damaged very easily by harsh gun cleaning chemicals. Stick to stuff like Break-Free and things should be fine if you get your gun refinished. I also put a coat of wax on my clear coated guns and have noted no wear whatsoever - even on one that gets carried a lot.

I used Breakfree on my exclusively and the finish peeled off quite badly. S&W said they'd fix it but I had to pay to ship it to them. After a month they sent me a bill for $375 to refinish it. I called them to find out why they were now charging me and they said the finish is not covered under warranty. Obviously I wasn't going to pay for that so I had to pay shipping back to me. $50 for nothing and I traded it as soon as I got it swearing of S&W for good until I had a yearning for a 340 which has a much more durable finish.

My 637-1 and 340SC both have wearing through of the clear coat finish, but I'm not worried about it. They are working guns, as all mine are, not safe queens or collectibles. Check out the backstrap on this one, carried for +10 years.

robotoid,

Now THAT is what a carry gun should look like. My 642 is starting to get a similar wear on the top of the backstrap.

I think wear and peeling are two different issues. A peeling issue, especially if I did not abuse the gun with harsh chemicals, would be a very frustrating experience. It is a sign of something gone wrong at the factory. Honest wear is a sign of honor.

I have read of fewer peeling issues in the last couple of years. Maybe Smith and Wesson has improved the finish and application process, and maybe users are beginning to head SW's warnings concerning the cleaning of these guns.

Have the coating blasted off, it'll leave a nice matte finish on the metal and you never have to worry about it again.
