As I mentioned in another thread, I decided to do some work on my 642.

I started thinking about replacing the rebound spring and the hammer spring.

For the hammer spring, there are three weights available: 8, 8.5, and 9 lbs. Apparently the factory spring is 8.5 lbs. I'm thinking putting in the 8 lb. spring. Any reports of unreliability with that spring?

What about problems with replacing the rebound spring with a lighter one?

Thanks.

I echo to same thought. I have always thought the better choice was to adapt to the firearm, rather than adapt the firearm to me.

Now that's just downright silly. We are humans, we adapt our environments to suit us.

If I had to adapt to the gun, I wouldn't be shooting bullseye anymore because presbyopia keeps me from focusing on the front sight and I wouldn't have a red dot. My pin gun wouldn't be compensated or have a 2 lb trigger. My shotgun's stock would be too inches too short. And so on and so on and scooby dooby do on.

I put a 12lb in my 642 and its by no means a light trigger and I still have a very solid reset. I bought the set from Wolff that was 12-16 lb. I started with the 15 and then the 13 before the 12. I wish I bought the set with the 11 lb spring.

On small defense revolvers, triggers are heavy, but I never change anything. The heavy spring makes for reliable ignition, which is more important than shrinking the group size by a minute amount.

I would submit that if the pull weight is too heavy, the best way to really get a substantially easier trigger (as opposed to a trigger that it is only slightly better) is to switch to a different gun.

To drop your trigger pull from 12-14 pounds to 6.5 pounds with reliable ignition, just get a SHIELD in 9mm. You get 7 rounds instead of 5, less felt recoil due to the reciprocating action and recoil spring, faster follow-up shots, and stopping power that is at least the same as, and usually better than 38 Special.
