I know it's probably not recommended to lighten the springs in a rimfire, but I ordered Wolf shooter's packs of hammer springs and rebound springs.

The OEM hammer spring is 12 lbs and the Wolf kit includes 8, 8.5, and 9 lb. springs. I installed the Wolf 9 lb. spring. I have not had a chance to check ignition reliability yet.

But the rebound spring... OEM is 18 lb. (according to Wolf) and the Wolf kit I purchased has 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 lb springs. Strangely, the Wolf springs are two different lengths, both longer than the OEM. Stranger is that the 13 and 14 lb springs are considerably shorter than the 12 lb. spring.

But ALL of them are longer than my OEM spring and I was unable to successfully install the Wolf 14 lb. rebound spring. I sent a query to the tech dept. at Wolf.

Anyone have experience with Wolf springs in a 317-3?

The trigger rebound spring does not effect ignition. I like a 14 LB on most of mine. I also polish the slide on the bottom and left side and the area of the frame the slide wears on. That reduces friction.

My little 2" 317 no dash is as smooth as silk.

Here's my 317-3's OEM 18 lb. rebound spring, on the left, next to the Wolf 14 lb. spring that came in my Shooter's Pack...

I tried to install this Wolf 14 lb spring and couldn't compress it enough to get it in place. I don't think it's possible.

Again, has anyone here used a Wolf rebound spring in their 317-3? Was it this much longer than the OEM spring?

I’ve installed several Wolff 14lb rebound springs but never one in a 317. For me, the trick is a Bic pen. That allows me to push the spring far enough into the rebound slide to get it past the pin. Then I just push the slide down gently and also apply a little compression to the other side of the rebound spring to get it all the way past the pin. Might take an attempt or two, but it’s always worked for me.

The longer springs are a smaller wire diameter. They are made correctly for the designated spring force.

You can use the tip of a small phillips screwdriver to install them. Have one of the slots in the tip facing up, that means one of them will be facing down. When you compress the spring and lower the rebound slide, the retaining pin can go up in the bottom slot and retain the bottom side of the spring. Then it's easy to push the spring and slide down the rest of the way.

Thanks for the suggestions, gentlemen. I installed the 13 lb. rebound spring successfully. Along with the 9 lb. hammer spring, the double-action pull feels much nicer.

I'll get to the range for function testing on Monday.

Thanks again,
Bob

Just as an FYI i have never had much luck with 12#or under in any smith. Triggers needed to be manually reset. 13# is minimum and 14# is never worry territory.
On the 22lr guns i would prefer to leave factory rebound spring factory as I have found it doesnt affect my accuracy as much with all things considered. I went thru several springs on the 63 and finally went back to stock.
1) The entire action working together will determine trigger pull -(pretty slick on the 617 less so on the 63) so polishing internal should net better overall results than spring swaps alone.
2) Im entirely focused on trigger pull with the gun at the bench, in contrast to solely focused on fundamentals and front sights at the range where a smoother trigger pull is more advantageous.
YMMV

I did get to the range on Monday and the 317 performed like a champ; no ignition issues. I'm pleased with it!

It was one of those long, fun days at the club range. I brought six handguns I recently inherited so I could show them to a buddy. They all ended up being shot, as we'll as the 317, so I had a lot of cleaning to do when I got home.

:)
