I'm asking if anyone has experience with the PC or Pro versions of the 642.

In particular, I'm looking at the Performance Center version with wood inserts on the grip.

The specs say it has a PC tuned action and is cut for moon clips.

Does the PC tuning make a difference? Does anyone use moon clips with a 38?

This gets asked a lot and there are some good discussions to help you if you run a search.

In a nutshell, the Pro versions of the 642 and 442 (and Pro versions in general) have no actual trigger tuning.

The PC 642 you mention with wood inserts I have had trigger time on and there is a felt improvement based on whatever the Performance Center does to them. It's isn't a game-changer by any stretch, nor anything that can't be achieved on a regular J-frame with a little work, but out of the box, yes, the trigger's a little better.

Moon clips in a defense piece are controversial, with opinions for and against in many directions. But to answer your question, yes, many people use and recommend moon clips in .38.

I bought one about a year ago. Dry fired and inspected it at the gun store. Brought it home, cleaned it up, got some snap caps, and started dry firing it. It started locking up. Took some advice, removed the grips, and hosed it out with contact cleaner. Stuff that looked like sand came out of it. Oiled it up. Been fine since. Make sure you thoroughly check it out before you pay for it.

My standard 642 has been fine. I’ve plugged it and put a spring kit in it. It’s my most carried J-frame.
