I've had a 642 stainless .38 for 20yrs and love it. I've recently started buying semi-autos in 9mm. I now have a Shield 9mm and a M&P full size 9mm. Love them both. I saw a Charter Arms 9mm Pitbull in 9mm that doesn't use moon clips. I am very interested in going all one caliber and if S&W would make a small J-frame enclosed hammer 9mm w/o moon clips, it would sell like hotcakes. They made the Model 547 9mm revolver that didn't use moon clips but discontinued it. I would much rather buy a S&W than a Charter Arms. Oh yeah, I recently bought an M&P Sport rifle too.

I second the 642 in 9mm! But I wouldn't hesitate to buy a Charter Arms 9mm if I could find one.

Yeah I'd buy one if it didn't have the lock & they could put anodizing back on these Airweights..
Here's the 642 no dash that I fit a 940-1 cylinder into making a convertible 9/38 Airweight 942

So you now have a .38 and a 9mm? How hard is that to have done? I assume a gunsmith has to do it? Does the 940 cylinder use moon clips? That would still be ok if I could take my 642 I have now and make it shoot 9mm. Does anything have to be done to the barrel? Any info you can give would be great. If I can convert my 642 to 9mm I will do it immediately.

Headknocker, I just found another S&W thread you had that goes into detail on this. How do I figure out which cylinder my 642 will accept before I start buying the wrong parts or guns for parts?

I forgot, my 642 is not an airweight. It is stainless. I have had it for a long time. I bought it new back when they didn't have airweights, just blue or stainless.

A 942 with the 547 extractors. That has been postulated here before. An interesting concept, but is it likely to see production? If it did, I would be in line.

That's exactly what I want! Even though finding an old 547 would be nice, they are not the size that people want now in the small revolvers.
Smith & Wesson-please make a 942 with 547 extractors.
