Steven,
Please give us some more info. Were you shooting and it just stopped in that position after you fired a shot? Were you using factory ammo or reloads.? It is possible that your barrel bulged due to a blockage or an overcharged load. There are other possibilities. I looked at your picture and it appears that you were taking it apart. Were you following a good take-down procedure carefully?

Hi i just bought it and was cleaning it. i was putting it back together and now it is stuck fast. I have a 745 and have never had this issue.
Is it stuck because I cocked it?

It appeared to have not been fired for a very long time.
it seems something is preventing the slide from moving if I could de cock it maybe that would help?

I Wacked it with a wooden mallet the hammer went down still not budging...

The 645 has a magazine safety so the hammer will not fall with the mag out. I assume you have the mag out right?

Insert the mag and see if the trigger will drop the hammer.

Usually a good firm smack on the back of the slide will resolve the issue.

Support the trigger guard and using a rubber mallet hit it firmly.

The cause of the jam is guide rod misalignment or the spring is out of place.

The only way I know is hitting the back of the slide with enough force to send the slide forward.

It is hard to hit it with the hammer forward.
Should I send it into Smith & Wesson they seem very nice when I speak with them!

Get a big rubber mallet. Hit it hard with the trigger guard supported at the front.

It will come off and damage short of dropping it is unlikely.

Try cupping your hand over the top of the slide so it doesn't fall off.

With the trigger guard supported the frame won't move when you hit the slide. Rubber is the best tool to do this.

Remember your gun is not damaged just misaligned.

See I knew it would come off.

Never seen that happen before and I have more than one.

It should be no more difficult than the 745. Just make sure the guide rod is set into the cut out.

Buy a spare if you can find one. They are available sometimes on ebay.

Bruce

Thanks..I have a few other Smith Auto's and have never seen this before Hopefully this was a one off I may just send it in anyway and let Smith & Wesson check it over.
I am a fan of Smith revolvers and Auto's Pre Hilary hole of course!
Bought my first Revolver a model 19 in 1979 after saving up my army pay...I could not afford the 66...
Anyway thanks for the advice.

If the recoil spring guide rod is not held captive by the tiny notch in the barrel's bottom lug, the slide will jam during reassembly and in a spectacular fashion. Go ahead, ask me how I know.

Me too.

I never broke a guide rod flange off.

Must of been one heck of a jam.

Minor problem if there is a guide rod reproduction or original to be found.

Stocked up on some spare parts years ago just in case.

Bruce
