Everyone must be selling! This is the second pistol I've come across today. 645 with 2 factory magazines. Shows minor signs of being used but not a lot. Not a safe queen. How desirable are these and what would a fair price be?

From the owner:
"It's in excellent cosmetic condition with no major flaws to note. Just some minor signs of use. 100% functional, appears to have been fired very little in its lifetime. Includes two original 8 round magazines that are also in near-perfect condition."

I'll try to get some pictures to post latter.

What do you think?

I have a 645 and I love it. I got it with five mags and nothing else about 3 years ago for $550 and thought it was a good deal at the time.

As a bonus, it fits my old Sig P220 holster like it was made for it.

To some they are an antiquated and heavy .45acp. To others they represent the first S&W semi-auto .45. They are not only historically important, (like the 39’s and 59’s,) but boringly reliable and capable of reasonably very good accuracy.

Does the 645 you’re looking at have a fixed or adjustable rear sight? Seems to make a difference in pricing.

I checked GB closed/completed sales and was shocked, $750.00-$1,300.00 + depending but that’s GB. Years ago I brought up the price of them here, (my very first infraction,) and it was estimated that they would be @ $1,200 new if S&W offered them. (That was 9 yrs ago.)

Classic S&W 2nd Gen quality that I couldn’t resist “improving” on from my parts stash since it’s just for the range.

I’ve posted this image here too many times but…..

Jim

Had a few, and moved them on down the road. Accuracy was always mediocre. But always got a chuckle out of cycling magazines of empty cases through them.

Here in Ohio, I’ve seen a few used 645s being asked for $800. Condition was so-so, maybe even were used duty guns. In cali…no clue what you should be paying for a better condition example. As for demand, price and condition are everything. They are a big heavy gun, so usually relegated to range toy, truck gun, or nightstand duty.

In July last year I bought a really nice example for $700 (out the door price) at a Miami gun show. It came with two factory magazines, but no box, etc.

Be advised, There are several styles/versions of the factory mags available for a 645. My favorite (which is NOT necessarily present with every gun) has a black follower and black plastic magazine bottom. I think they are the easiest to disassemble should you want to give the mag a proper cleaning.

ANYWAY, the 645 is a handsome, although very heavy piece. I love it.

If you like the condition of the one you're looking at, I'd try to buy it.

Best wishes,

I bought a 645 when they first came out...well built...reliable...accurate enough (after the first shot)...but the double-action pull was very long, heavy and very gritty. Not exactly Smith's finest accomplishment.

The 645 and its successors were and are duty holster pistols...not well suited for concealed carry but are overall decent guns...just not as good as some others on the market.

I eventually sold mine and really don't miss it. I really don't like pistols with the safety/decocker mounted on the slide. I guess I'm a 1911 single-action fan...but the Sig P220 is what I would consider the overall standard of DA/SA .45 ACP pistols.

I carried mine for 5 years in patrol. It was the only 45 we were allowed to carry. It was heavy, very accurate and reliable. I still have it with all its scars, beauty marks and the checkering worn off in some areas of the grips. I shoot it once a year.

I always enjoy the heavy part yeah so was a Garand, a B.A.R. and a M-14
anybody ever carry a M-60?
THEY ARE PART OF THE SMITH HISTORY.

PRICING. FOR NEW IN BOX. I would say $1,500.00 for used whatever you can grab them for.

Engraved a whole different price.. I wish i was able to buy this one whenever it was sold..probably decades ago.RON K.

I also carried 645 for the last 10 years of my 28 years. Still have it. Never failed me. It was a very heavy side arm and I still have lower back pain. Been retired for 15 years now. My favorite was a 9mm 659. Still have that one to. The 659 also never failed. I think I liked the 659 the most. Cannot beat 14 rounds.

From the description it sounds like excellent condition, so $500-$600 would be stealing it. But if you’re buying in Cali all bets are off. Might as well be called GB-land as far as pricing out there.

Despite some of the comments here, my 645 is at least as accurate as my 4506 but tends to want to hit a bit low with most 230grn FMJ range ammo. It’s 100% reliable and feeds all JHPs tried thus far. Per the ser.#, my gun is a later model in the run.
