Hello all,

I have recently acquired a 649-2 and it came with factory Smith wood combat grips. i know that this was an option on other models of that era, as i also own a 29-3 Lew Horton with similar grips. It did not come with the original box so I do not have the product code to reference.

My question was this an option for the 649 or a special run? I have not been able to locate info on this option.

See attached picture.

Thanks in advance.

Chris

Great gun! I love my 649-2. If my memory serves me correctly, the only grips that the 649-2's came with straight from the factory were the standard j-frame wood grips (that adorned J-frames for decades) and, later, the Uncle Mike's black rubber boot grips.

Enjoy your bodyguard!

Thanks for the help so far. Still trying to get info on the grips it see what model they are off of.

They are probably aftermarket stocks. I don't believe they ever came as an option on "J" frames. Someone will come along to correct me if I'm wrong.

Those are factory round butt J-frame combats, one of two factory round butt combat styles available in the '80s and early '90s.

To the best of my knowledge, no standard 649s shipped with those, but the stocks were purchasable from S&W.

They are not off of any specific model.

In the olden days any Factory wood grip could be found in almost every well stocked gun store.

They were blister packaged and used to hang on the peg board.

Just as today you can go to Smith and Wesson's website and buy various grips.

The grips pictured on the OP's 649 are Factory original manufactured grips.

The grips pictured on the 638 are laminated wood stocks that I believe were manufactured by Altomonte

The stocks construction match my 29's factory combat stocks, they are not reproduction or aftermarket, so this explains a lot for me. Thanks to all!!
