649 ?

Why are there not a lot of talk about the SW model 649 on the forum ? I think they are a great little gun, or am I wrong or is there something wrong with this model? thanks Geraldo

Not a thing wrong with them. When I finally bought a J-frame, I went for the 649. Then I put some ebony stocks on it to lengthen the grip just a bit.

The primary appeal for this over a DA-only revolver is the single action option. Even if I never wanted to use it in SA, why would I buy a 642 or other hammerless model and willingly give up a variety of functionality that I had the power to preserve? Besides, I like the humpback style. Others don't, and that's their choice.

The only thing I don't like about this gun is the front sight. I think I will put a tritium big dot sight on it at some point. I did that to a 296 (another humpback, .44 Special on a bigger frame, unfortunately DA only) and the big dot sight helped a lot in target acquisition.

The 649 is one of my favorites. I picked this one up in 1995. Another agency had it in their inventory and had never issued it. They were getting rid of all their revolvers and going 100% autos. I picked it up still in the box for $150. I had been carrying a blued 49 for the previous 20 yrs as my back up and usual off duty gun. The 649 took it's place and I carried it everyday until I retired 4 yrs ago. Off duty it was always with me. My family then fixed it up for me as a retirement gift and it's still the gun I carry the most often.

I bought a nice model 49 3 years ago and eventually replaced it with a 649. My wife borrowed it after a bad firing pin experience with her 432. Awesome gun you can shoot in your pocket without a snag.

649's, and really all the bodguard style revolvers, are great little guns. The only problem I have found is that they are hard to come by in my neck of the woods.

Wonder why Smith is so light on the Bodyguard style? Look at Taurus. At this time they offer SEVEN of these. I prefer the S&W but if they can't give you the choice Taurus can............

I really like my 649 in .357 mag caliber. They are nice guns. Here it is with some of the other J Frames.

I like my Bodyguard a lot but in all truthfulness, my daily carry is a 642CT with a Mika Pocket holster. It's simply a lighter piece. Here is my Bodyguard:

love my model 49; blued, no-dash, pre-lock, pre-mim, 1st j-frame. i prefer to pocket carry my 342Ti AirLite, and ankle carry a 642-1.

from my experience, and ymmv, beautiful grips almost never equal recoil absorbing practical comfort for shooting boxes of rounds at the range.
