65-2 Questions

Just picked up this 65-2 last weekend on a trade for my Beretta 92fs. Came with the original box, paperwork and cleaning accessories. Hope I did good.
Have a couple questions though. Can anyone assist in dating this gun? Serial #7D710xx. From what I've read there's about a five year span this could fit into.
Second, is it possible these grips came from the factory or were they changed out at some point?

Great gun and great trade. You can always get a 92FS. Pinned and recessed 65's are hard to come by, especially ones in the box with docs. And yours is a 3", which is even nicer. No way those pachmayr grips came with the gun. Somebody switched them out. I see the box has "R" in the stock section, but S&W never shipped with pachmayr stocks, and the -2 certainly shipped with factory wood. Stick to 158 grain magnums with that K frame. Easier on the gun and the forcing cone.

You did great!! Don't have the book, but I'm sure someone will give you the birth date shortly. I've got a 4" 65-2 and a 3" 65-3. My favorite handguns. The 3" is on my hip as I type. It's a great carry gun.

Nice trade! I would of done it too. The 3-inch Model 65 is ALWAYS in demand and yours sure looks good.

Great score. Looks to be in nice shape. Birth date is probably around transition time as I see the recessed cylinder but not the pinned BBL. Good trade.

Thanks guys. I figured it was a good trade. Can't find any for sale online and all the reviews here were great. I can always get another 92.
And as metioned above, it is recessed but not pinned. Now just waiting for somone to chime in with a birth date.

Sweet trade you made there! 92's are a dime a dozen, recessed cylinder 65-2's are not. Mines a little older s/n 1Dxxxx and is pinned and recessed.

I have not see any 65-1 or 65-2 3" that are P&R. But that's not to say they dont exist.

Yours is obviously a transitional gun, recessed but not pinned. Also interesting in that the S&W logo is on the sideplate. Most of the transitional guns had the logo on the left side under the cylinder release.

It's also possible that the 3" barrel guns were never pinned. Like I said, I have never seen one. Has anyone else? Most of the 3" guns you see are 65-3 or 65-5

I have a P&R 13-2 3", my only model 65 is a 65-1 4"
