Nearly two years ago I acquired a 65-3 3". I purchased it via auction and what I received was basically a beater and the seller would not accept a return. I've had a lot of successful gun auction transactions and unfortunately I was bound be get burned at some point, obviously he knew he was selling a gun with problems and was dishonest about it's condition. Okay, lesson learned, moving on...
I took it to my gunsmith for repair and there it has sat untouched as he is closing down his business, he contacted me last night to return it to me for which I am thankful. The point of my posting is not to lament the difficult road I've had but I would like to get this repaired if possible. I'm a shadetree gunsmith at best and I do enjoy working on them when it's within my skill level however this one may be a bit beyond it. Here are the issues I am aware of:
- badly out of time
- excessive end shake
I can post some pictures after I take possession of it again hopefully this weekend. I know the timing can be repaired with a new hand and end shake can be remedied with shims. Is frame stretching a real thing? Could this account for the end shake?
Hopefully it is not trash. Would I be best served to send this back to S&W and see what they say?
