What would be a buy price on a 657-4 Mountain Gun, box and manual. Looks to be in good shape cosmetically, no idea of mechanics but will ask if I can pin down a decent price.
Don't really need it but thought about this for deer hunting.

The news is bad if the seller has been watching this website closely. A member starting posting a WTB ad for a 657 Mtn. Gun last spring and kept bumping his ad through the fall. He was pleading how he wanted one to fill out a collection of Mtn. Guns and would pay top dollar but never specified what that was. Approximately two weeks ago one that was advertised in the classifieds here for over $850 sold in a few hours. It had seen enough use for some surface flaws to be described. I’m sorry I don’t recall the details or exact price. If you have more patience or motivation than me experimentation should find a search phrase that will bring up that ad.

I like reducing the recoil down below standard .44 magnum in a revolver as light as a Mtn. Gun and the relative scarcity has to appeal to the collector in you. Post a picture for us if you get it.

Edit to add: I’m sorry I got the price of the one that sold 2 weeks ago wrong. I changed it. Since I’m not in the market for a 657 Mtn. Gun it didn’t stick in my memory. Despite posting a too high price, I don’t think I steered the ladder13 in the wrong direction. Any gun you immediately get offered a nice 58 for can’t be too shabby.

I think if you were wanting one bad anything south of 900 would be a bonus if it was crisp, if your not sure your going to like it and could get it for around 7 bills then you could easily flip it for something you want, let us know how you make out

There was only one production run of 657 Mtn. Guns. That was in 1999. I’d love to know how many were manufactured. They’re pre-lock but MIM. On the good side they appear to have broach cut rifling rather than having been rifled by eroding metal with electricity. (EDM?)

Sometimes used .41 magnums pass through stores at unwanted turkey prices but you have to be lucky to find those. In the current panicked market I’d count your blessings and just pay the man's price.

The 657 Mountain Gun here on the forums went for $850 OBO a few weeks ago...someone said "I'll take it at $850" while I was waiting for some photos.

Edit: If you get it and don't like it, send me a PM! For deer hunting I picked up a 6½" bbl 657-2 Classic Hunter last November for $700.

I do, sort of . I have a NIB 4" 57 blue no dash with original cardboard shipping box, presentation box, blue box and everything else that came with it. That's in my safe and staying there.
Also have a 58 that I shoot, but not as much as I like. Just getting ready to reload for the 41's.

Reloading for the .41 is the only way to go. I reload using bullets from 210 grains to 265 grains, from easy shooting to full house loads. It is a great caliber (as is .44 mag, .45 acp, .45 colt, etc.....)! Another addiction.

But if you ever tire of that 657 MG, like I said above, let me know!

Great guns.I have three of them.Mine are used almost daily.Very accurate with handloads from 210 grains up to 265 grains.I think $900 or less would be a good price for one.

Just gotta tell my 41 mag Mtn. gun story. I've posted it before - sorry. A little over a year ago, I had been looking for one also. I had just mentioned to a friend at work that if he ever ran across one, to me let me know so I could snag it. No sooner had I said that, and one popped up here in the classified section ( a 657-4) in like new condition for a VERY good price. It appaeared as I was looking at the classifieds, and I bought it within minutes of posting. It is probably my favorite revolver. You'll be glad to get one. wyatte

I've got Ahrends on most of mine, the fit is perfect for my hand, I think they look great and the price is affordable, although I'd really like a set of grasshorns with some bark showing and medallions, I'm saving for a set now for a special 629

About two cylinders full of Magnum loads, and you might be re-thinking that decision.
I honestly can't imagine shooting mine without the Hogues, although I believe Taffin has written about putting better shaped, wood grips on MGs and reducing their felt recoil.

Kenny, I've got a 3" 657 and a 6½" 657 Classic Hunter. I use Cast Performance bullets (at Grizzly Cartridge web site) in 250 grains and 265 grains. The 250's are for the 3" at ~900 fps and the 265 are for full-house hunting rounds in the CH. Hodgdon has loading data for these Cast Performance gas check bullets. I use H-110 for the heavy charges and they have good data for them. For the 3", I sent a query to Alliant Powder regarding the use of Unique and got a reply, with a load suggestion, the same day. Great folks there.

I did shoot the 3" with a max-load Hornady 210 grain XTP using H-110. Though quite pleasant to shoot in the Classic Hunter, it was distinctly unpleasant in the 3" version!

Try the selection from Montana Bullet works. They have an extensive line of plain base and gas checked.

thanks guys...i have sev.thousand rounds of 41 mag.at any given time but....want to try some heavier bullets...i reload the 210gr lead to use in my 3"657/4"57/7.5"657and 6"57
great round to shoot and reload for!
