A friend is considering putting a couple of 66's up for sale, but really doesn't know what to ask for them.

He's got a pair of 66-1 2.5" barrel, both with original boxes and all the expected contents. One of these has been fired/carried. The other is new in the box.

He's also got a 4" 66 (no dash - later variant with the black rear sight assembly), that's been fired/carried. I think he said he has the box for this one as well.

I told him the NIB one might easily be worth over $1k to the right collector, but looking at gunbroker completed auctions, I'm having trouble finding anything to support that.

From the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson 4th Edition

ANIB--$800.00
Exc--$575.00
VG--$350.00

A pic of the guns, boxes, and end labels will get you good estimates from the guys here.
Good juck.

njL, check GunBroker recent sales. Several 2 1/2" model 66-1's have recently sold for crazy pricing, $2,000.00 +

Most value guides are very outdated by the time they are printed and distributed. They also cannot adjust for different markets - in some, certain barrel lengths are more in demand than others as are different models. I think that anyone expecting to buy a Model 66 with a 2-1/2" barrel in ANIB condition for $800 anywhere in this country is kidding themselves.

Ok, here are some pics. On the 4" one, I was wrong about the box. That one got tossed years ago.

4" 66 no-dash. Several years ago, I traded a used Glock 19 for one like this, but even older, with I think a bit more wear, and mine came only with Altamonte's. My assumption is, this is by far the least valuable of the bunch.

This is the one he says is new in the box. I haven't actually seen these in person, though they belong to a friend I shoot with regularly. Looking at the pic, I actually wonder if it's as new in the box / unfired as he says. He didn't include it in the pics, but he has the bag with cleaning brush, sight tool, etc.

This is the one he definitely carried/fired.

Boxes for the 2.5" ones...not sure which is which, and I've blacked out part of what I assume is the serial number on each.

He's looking to sell them all, and asked me to help him figure out what to ask at the next gun club swap meet...and if they don't sell there, he's open to on-line. I'm tempted to try making an offer on the used 2.5" one. What's a good "to an old friend price?" :)

In my area a nice carried 2.5" 66-1 with box and papers, tools etc would bring $1000+. Pictured below is my new in the box 66-1 2.5" with all docs, papers, tool, original box that I purchased from a member on this forum for $1000 April 2018. I wouldn't sell it because they are getting hard to find. A new in the box 2.5" no dash or -1 could bring up to 2K on a auction site...

I recently sold a no dash 66 2.5" nice shape that had been carried for $800...not near a nice as those pictured. Something to consider, the 3,4 and 6 inch model 66 are less punishing when firing magnum loads.
