In the 60s when I was a street racer, many cut up and modified their Vettes so they handled better straight down a quarter mile. Headers, Cheater Slicks in cut our wheel wells, Lakewood Scatter Shields etc. Help drive up the value of the Matching Numbers cars and those with Fram Off Retorations, though it was not all that long ago that if you paid $50,000 plus to do a frame off restoration, you would lose money at least in the short term.

DM Corvette in the Chicago Land Area does the Chevy restoration for them and has a great shop on Ogden avenue. I have purchased a number of Corvettes from Dave and Mary.

My '70 had a factory installed little plaque on the shifter cover plate "350hp - 350cu". In a race my car could beat my buddies '69 427 Corvette outta the hole and for about 3/4 of a city block, then he'd go flyin by. Mine had 11:1 compression and I put 2 head gaskets on each side to try to lower compression and keep it running on the crumby gas.

Mine had that same plate, but I had forgotten about it, It left with the first wife some 20 years ago. My '70 had a '71 engine in it when I bought it in the 90's. Also had the little door that popped up with the wipers. After the very first time, I never drove it in the rain, unless I got caught out in it. The top leaked and the carpet always got wet, never figured that one out before if left ............ Had a '94 too, but it was such a pain to get out of with bad knees. Sure was fun while setting in it.

I had more Mustangs than Vettes, including the one I wish I still had now, a '69 R code 428 CJ 4 speed. Didn't drive as good as the newer Vette though. Boss has a 2,000 sumthin that scares the **** outta me when I ride with him. He just giggles........

Just in IMHO 1967 produced the best American made sports cars ever. The Corvette roadster with small block and 4spd and the Z-28 Camaro DZ-302. In fact just about everything Chevrolet did that year was great, the Malibu was a great little car that year. They were cars you could really drive, maybe not the fastest in a quarter mile but still a blast to drive on the road. One of the best drives of my life was after I helped a buddy finish restoring a '67 Corvette roadster, high output 327, 4spd. A true driver's car with great handling and plenty of horsepower, my face ached for hours afterward.
