I have a 681 in fair condition. I am wanting to "round butt" it and have the barrel cut to 3". Has anyone done this to a 581, 681, 586, or 686? If so, are there any special problems? What should cutting the bbl cost?

Thanks for the help!

I would think it would be better to buy a 3" L-Frame barrel from Smith and have it fitted to your 681. It's not cheap, but would probably be easier than cutting down a 4".

I also vote on it being an impractical idea. The round butting process very likely will cut in the serial number, a real no-no as far as BATF is concerned. It would also likely cost you more than buying a proper RB model to begin with.

Thanks for the replys!

The round butt is not often a problem. I have seen a number of K & L frames turned into RB without messing up the serial number. My concern is the BBL. I am not sure of the challenges it would create.

Anyone else have any experience in this area?

I am considering cutting and filing barrel to 3". Then need a smith to machine dovetail, similar to 1911 and fit sight of choice. These are very popular and Midway and brownells sell the sights.

That is also my idea. I want a night sight, and I hoped someone would kniow the best height for a 3" L frame.

Thanks for the reply!
