I recently bought this nice 686-1 2.5 inch. It doesn't have the white outline rear sight so from what I have read, it is not one of the Lew Horton guns. It does have the extra "M" stamp indicating it has been returned for the firing pin bushing recall. My question is on the originality of the fingergroove combat grips. Were these guns shipped from the factory that way? The fingergrooves don't really fit my pinky finger well so I am thinking about changing them out.

Beautiful piece!
Yes, your gun was shipped with those grips. The 2.5" 686s came with combats through the dash 3 engineering revision. The first run of LHs were no dash.

Here's my LH 686 no dash without M stamp. I also have a dash 3 and dash 4 plus

As tempting as it may be to sell those combats for the small fortune they're worth, may I please ask that you not separate them from that weapon permanently? Heheh

;)

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know. If they were original then I don't want to separate them. The fingergrooves put my little finger a little splayed down so a bit uncomfortable. Any recommendations on a comfortable grip? I wear a size large glove and like the look of nice wood or maybe stag.

Thanks for the compliment. I have been looking for a 586 locally for over a year. This one shows up and its too unique to pass up. It really shows very little use. A 586 will someday find its way home with me.

I would be perfectly happy with a 4 inch 586. Didn't know the 2.5 inch 586s were that rare! I wonder why the short 686s are much more common.

I've seen every dash in a 686 2.5", except for a -2 personally. They've literally made them in every dash variation. And still made today as a -6.
In a 586, the 2.5" were only made in a -3 and -4. Less than 500 in both were made.

Here is my -3 686 and -4 586 , 2.5".

Are there any characteristics that identify a Lew Horton gun?
