I just thought I would show the 3 inch 686 I found at the Stout Field Armory in Indianapolis today. There were several Talo edition s there but This older -1 just seemed right. Had to give $500. plus a nice set of N Combat finger groove Grips but I had not seen one of these for sale in awhile.

Am I crazy, or does that 686 have a bead blast finish and a solid black front sight? Look inside of the crane (where the model # is tamped) does it have a stamp that reads CS-1?

It sure looks the part....great find either way.

Can you have a look near where it is stamped MOD 686-1 on the frame under the barrel, and look for a CS-1 or other stampings? If it is a CS-1 (a special run made for US Customs) you got it for about half its current value.

It is bead blast & solid black front sight but I couldn't find any CS-1 markings. the serial number is BAN1056

It probably shipped in early 1988, and it may either be a CS-1 overrun and not stamped as such or someone really wanted it to look like one. Either way you got a great deal. Enjoy!

That serial prefix is not for any CS-1's. You got a 686 with a added down the road at some point 3 inch barrel and bead blasted finish. Still a nice gun for 500 bucks. Enjoy it.

I forgot to mention that it did come with the original pachmeyers with the window at the bottom and has the M stamp above the model number.

I am in agreement, this is the version S&W should be offering for sale. The 3 Inch barrel L Frame is about all the revolver I can conceal carry year round. Barrels longer than 3 Inch block access to my Right back pocket, where I carry my Bill Fold.

I also like to carry reloads. With a 7 shooter you are limited to the HKS 587 or a 5 Star. With a 6 Shooter you have the choice of a Safariland Comp II or Comp III, as well as the L Frame Jet Loader. All of which are faster to operate than a Turn Knob speedloader.

Next issue is shooting your concealed carry revolver in a match. IDPA SSR Division, and ICORE Classic both limit the round count to 6.

I gave up on locating a reasonably priced 3 Inch 686, and instead picked up a 3" Willy Clapp GP100. It is a 6 shooter, and not a collectors piece like a CS1.
