686-1 or 681

I purchased this gun off a dealer. It's registered as 686-1, but my understanding, this is a 681 because the gun has a fixed sight. Am I'm wrong?

The model on the gun seems to be modified?

I'm confused. Need some input. Thanks.

All 681s and 581s ( blued rather than stainless) are fixed sight models. As I understand it, the -1 means there was an engineering change from the 681 no dash. The experts here may be able to say exactly what that was. It have been related to the recall of the 681, I'm not sure.

No shortage of mis-marked revolvers. Yours is a 681. Is it marked 686-1 in the crane cut-out? The serial number, by the way, is the number on the bottom of the grip frame that on your gun will begin with three letters and then have numbers following.

The part that pushes the cylinder up to the next position when the gun is cocked is called the hand. The dash 1 change modified that part to what is called a "floating hand" that required less fitting. The modification for the firing pin bushing was the dash 2 change, which (I think) also got rid of the floating hand. Nice gun, by the way, so congratulations on that. A close-up picture of the inside of the crane (where the model number is) may help clear up any confusion.

That's my thought. The model no do have some indication of being messed with. The serial no is original.

I'll take a pic and upload tonight.

Question, can manufacturer (S&W) alter the model info due to recall? Or can a firearm manufacturer altered the model due to specific reason?

I'm just want to know if this firearm safe to keep.

Original, I think it's mark as 681. There is indication of altercation on the "1" to 6-1.

I'll check on the serial tonight.

Assuming there is nothing wrong with the serial number, there's no reason to think there is anything unsafe about the gun. If it is mis-marked (meaning it has a different model number then it should) it won't be the first one to roll out of the factory like that. But I'm confused..your initial post saids "It's registered as 686-1". I'm not sure if you're referring to the model mark on the gun, or if the dealer wrote it up wrong and put 686-1 on the paperwork. Like I said, your photo tonight will probably clear everything up.

If inside the crane it's marked 686-1, well, as noted, yours would not be the first to be mismarked, double stamped, etc. But no ifs, ands, or buts, yours is a 4" 681. That thing should be safe to shoot with any sane .357 load you want to put in it. Meaning ANY factory loading will work, and work just fine. As for .38's? Any of those as well so I don't think you have a safety issue.

What I'm curious about is what hoops you might have to jump thru regulatory wise if someone prior to you put the wrong model down on a form. So while not a "safety issue" do you have a "public safety issue"? Inquiring minds want to know.

P.S. Good luck with any hurdles but sheez...how do ya'll deal with all that red tape stuff?

I know the gun in excellent condition. Cylinder Lock is tight. So, I'm not worrying about gun functionality.

You're right. Since I lived in MA, I just worry about the legit of the firearm registration.

So if somewhere in the past, someone marked it down as a 686-1, then what? Does that put you in some type of legal limbo, or jeopardy? Even if the serial on the butt matched your "registration"?

Guess I'm asking is if your paperwork is mismarked, then what?

PSS-Can't resist it Brother, tried but can't, come on down South, we got the room and don't put up with legislators like that. If someone intro'd this as a bill in LA or TX, uh...even in Houston, they'd have one of the shortest political careers in the state. Well...maybe in Houston.

Here is the pics. I left out some info. The firearm was send back to manufacturer for recall and it has the M marked. The pic show that it's 681-1 with the 6 overstamped.
