I went back to the shop where I bought my Sigma and found a gem that I just had to have. A 6 inch barrel model 686-1.
I've seen them in shops for $550-650 around here, but not very often. People aren't trading these in very often. This shop had it for $499, and I was able to talk them down, but just a little. It looks like new, locks up like new.
The serial # is AUU22xx. Can anyone give me an idea how old it is?
I'm gonna have to wait until the weekend to get to the range with it. I know it'll be a good shooter.

Based on what I can see in SCSW, it looks like it was made in 1986 or 1987. 686-1 came out in 1986 and 686-2 came out in 1987. Your serial # AUU falls between entries AHC 1687 (Jan 1986) and AVB 8654 (July 1987). You can get a letter for $50 from S&W and find out when it shipped. I've got a 6" 686-4 I bought new, you will enjoy yours. Good find.

You will certainly enjoy shooting your 686 as do with my 686 no dash with 6 inch barrel. You got yours for a good price. I sent mine back to S&W for the modification and also had it drilled and taped for a scope mount while it was there. Now have a red dot on it. I also recently obtained a no dash 681. Both are great examples of S&W wheel guns.

Tgwillard, thank you for mentioning the modification. I knew about that, but had completely forgotten about it when I bought my gun. I had to dig into old posts to find the info on it. As soon as I got home I checked mine, and it does have the "M" stamp in the crane. I was relieved.

Congratulations on buying a great revolver and a favorite of mine as a no dash 6 inch 686 was my first handgun.
