I just traded for a 686-2 and want to add a scope of red dot. I found there's a b square mount that doesn't require any further drilling/tapping. My problem is although that everyone says it exists I cannot for the life of me find the part for sale. Any help would be great

Don't try too hard to find the B-Square mount. Unless they have a new one the mount works by using a clamp that surrounds the frame lunette, or receiver ring. The mount will severely damage the finish of the frame. You will be better off to buy a mount for the new style frame and drill and tap the frame.

Leupold makes a base specifically designed for S&W revolvers that HAVE NOT been drilled and tapped at the factory and have the old style rear sight (the new style rear sight is shaped slightly different). It fits snugly in the recess where the rear sight would normally sit. It's a good base, and it accepts "turn-in" style rings. It does require drilling and tapping the top strap for three holes (very much like current D&T'd Smiths). Once it's removed, the rear sight covers the holes, so it doesn't detract from the appearance.

Actually, he'd want an older B-Square mount that pre-dates the clamp type. They made a "no-gunsmithing" mount for S&W's back in the late 70's / early 80's that used no such clamp. Here's a picture of one on my converted Model 28...

It obviously used the one hole for the rear sight tang and somehow locked into the rear of the frame where the undercut slot for the blind elevation nut went. Sorry - not disassembling my 28 to check. However, I don't think B-Square has made this arrangement in years. Your only hope is finding one used, or even more remotely, NOS somewhere.

Good luck in your quest.

Adios,

THAT B-SQUARE MOUNT DEFINITELY DOES EXIST. I ACQUIRED ONE WITH A GUN THAT I PURCHASED ON GUNBROKER. I COULD NOT FIND ANY INFO REGARDING THE MOUNT, SO I DON'T BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY IN PRODUCTION. I HAVE MINE HOLDING A RED DOT ON AN 8 3/8" 617. I DON'T THINK THAT THE MOUNT IS CAUSING ANY DAMAGE, BUT I WILL SELL THE GUN AS IS, WITH THE RED DOT ATTACHED, WHEN THE TIME COMES………..
