I think "NIB 4-inch 686-2" says about all there is to say about the gun. Based upon that, it should be a square-butt gun in new condition in its box with all its paperwork and unused tools so about the only value-influencing unknown is how nicely figured its checkered target stocks are. It's something that is no longer made - a square-butt S&W revolver with forged parts and no lock in a popular barrel length - and should only increase in value as time goes on. Accordingly, I wouldn't hesitate to pay $600 for it if I didn't already have a -3 just like it.

A friend of mine just bought a new 586 for his new wife. It had an awful 13 pound double action and 5 pound creepy single action pull. UGH!! List price on the label was $799. The B/C gap was .004 on one side and .014 on the other.
So, to me, anything less than the price of a new one is ok!

For it. Which is a little bit more than I wanted to pay.
So I let him keep it,think I'll look for a nice shooter.

I think you made the right decision. I recently paid $1,400 for a five-inch 686-3 National Match and that is probably a few hundred more than I could sell it for today but since only 500 were made, it will appreciate more rapidly than that four-inch 686-2 you were looking at.
If you check GunBroker.com frequently, you'll find nice used 686s for considerably less. Since collectability isn't as important as shooting a gun is to you, that's the better choice. I have one unfired S&W revolver, a 686-4 PowerPort, and almost regret buying it because I know if I ever shoot it, the gun's value will drop.

Yes, $1K is too high in the current market. Richard has the current market pretty well described; these are going at or just under at what a current new version brings, so $600-650 sounds about right.

It looks like the -2 came out in 1987, but first seen on the market in March 1988. The -3 also came out in 1988. Wouldn't this mean the number of -2's produced is probably fairly low?

Yes it is the least common, but not "rare" by any means. At the time these guns were being made the revolver was still king with LEO's and production runs were correspondingly large. Great for us, because it makes pre-lock M686's of all dash numbers readily available today.

Hello, good luck on your purchase, I recently got a like new,no box,686-4, round butt,2 1/2",with S/W bone grips for $550 otd, and was gland to find it. And a 686 no dash 4" square butt no box for $750 , right place wrong time, I think it was too much but I had to have it!

I just won a 686-2 on GB for $505. The grips are ugly and beat up Safariland brand, but I'll replace those. The gun looks really clean. I hope it's in as good condition as the pictures suggest.
