I'm really interested in the 3" variant of the 686+ but it seems to me that the 2.5" models are easier to track down and sometimes cheaper. Add to that that the 686 Performance Center comes in a 2.5" model and it makes me wonder if my quest for a 3" gun makes any sense.

Would cartridge ejection be enough of an issue for the 2.5" model? Any other shortcomings? This will be a defensive (sometimes carry) handgun that'll see some range time to stay proficient in its handling.

You can't go wrong with either. I own both and would not want to give up either.

How are you going to be using it?

And you are correct, the 3" are much harder to find and always, in my experience, more expensive. If you have an appreciation for three inch revolvers as I do you will not stop until you have one. At least one.

I own two 686+ Smiths, one with a 4" bbl and another with a 6" bbl. I probably won't be happy until I own both a 2.5" and a 3" variant of the 686+. You should probably grab either one if it becomes available and sort it out later.

You sound like you have a similar addiction... Coming from 1911s and Berettas, I've accumulated many similar pistols because of small variations :D

I guess my original question should be rephrased as "Which should I buy first"...

I was in the same predicament, wanting a 3" as my first revolver. I also like the wiley clapp ruger gp100. Had all but given up because all I could find were talos going for $900 on gb and decided to buy a 1911 instead. Went to the lgs and they had a new 3" 686. I still want the 1911, but I bought the 686 since theyre so hard to find now. Ive gotten a couple notifications from davidsons since but by the time I looked, they were sold. If you find one, but it because it wont last long.

When I found mine, there were two 2.5s in the case with it. While the 3s are harder to find, I have seen more than usual around lately.

Lately I have seen most of the 3 inch versions in the TALO model.
I had the 2.5 inch PC version, but while it was very accurate, I decided I prefer the conventional finish and round barrel.

Best,
Rick

Given the choice, I would prefer a 3 inch version of the 10, 13, 19, 64, 65, 66, and 686 over the shorter version. I prefer them due to the longer sight radius and due to the better ejection.

Its not pre-lock. I would have liked it to be but time will tell if I notice a difference.

Thanks guys!

Any holster recommendations??
