686 Hand Canon
I had a 617 with that barrel. Talk about front heavy with that small caliber bore, but, of course I no longer have it! Very accurate as was the 17 I had. Nice, nice gun and not real common. I have a 4” Python but would love one of the run of 38’s that Colt made with an 8”. Very pricey and I don’t think it’s one I could afford anyway. You’ll love that 686 especially shooting 357.

I came to this thread looking for information on a Model 586 with a 8 3/8" barrel, bit now I may have to hold out for a stainless one---these things are gorgeous!!!
I have a 586 local in a big chain pawn shop, but not sure if I can justify the $675 price tag right now.

That is a steal for an 8 3/8 586. The 686 is much more common.
Those are beeeyoooteephul guns! I don't think I can be comfortable with that long of a barrel but I know that my 6" M586 is a *****cat to shoot and superbly accurate.
Interestingly, and very personally, despite my remark about those guns being beautiful, and they are!, I find that shorter barreled revolvers are actually more attractive to me than the long barreled flavor.

You forgot to add except for that 2 lb under lug........In reality whatever you like and makes you happy is OK.

The 4th Engineering Change is definitely my favorite of the 686's! Congratulations on a great find misswired!
Well Mr. Brown this pistol has a problem.... no big deal ... we won't go backwards to woe is me buying a defective classic pistol.... but going forward, I think the cylinder is peened'... I can hang my fingernail on 5 of the cylinder notches . The cylinder doesn't want to release from the frame lock-up on two cylinders... on the older revolvers I have. ... non have this level of peening..

It’s still a “hawwwgs Leg”.
And as far as urban dictionary, not that Hollywood should dictate such terms, but I believe messr’s Jackson and Travolta in Pulp Fiction, referred in Awe to a six inch Python as “hand cannon”. There are hand-howitzers and hand-cannons.

Maybe these pics will show the cylinder peening. From all the lock-up checks, this pistol doesn't seem to have been fired a lot. I remember looking at another Smith' in this shop when a young clerk executed the spin/wrist snap closing the cylinder. Would this be the cause of cylinder peening, and what's the fix for this?

Those pics definitely show something going on there in the stop notches. And yes, the actions you just described could do that I imagine. That last picture's stop notch looks real bad to me. As for fixing that, hopefully one of the guys like steelslaver or another real knowledgeable type person can fill you in. If it ends up that you have to replace the cylinder, I would go for a 7 shot cylinder replacement. You should be able to have the factory do that if the cylinder can't be fixed.

Ya, I'd fall for that one too.
Well, this thread got the better of me and I went back to the pawn shop to have another look at the 586 I mentioned. She ain't perfect, but neither am I---so we should make a pretty good pair.
After a little negotiation (drumming up all the sad/beaten down looks I could muster) with the shop Manager, I was able to get out of the shop with the 586 for what I thought was a decent price. I cleaned the old girl up a bit and put her in the safe last night. I snapped a quick picture on the dining table and thought I would share her with you since you all inspired me to go back and rescue her from the young lady who seemed to hit every piece of glass on the display case when pulling pistols in/out to show people.
