My brother just picked up a 686-4, 4"and he was curious when it was shipped / made? Also, if the product code says it came with Hogue grips or Target grips fom the factory. He picked it up with the rubber grips.

Serial # BSE81xx
Product Code 104222

Thank you for your time!!

My 4" 686-4 had a round butt so it couldn't have come with factory Target stocks. In fact, I traded it to another forum member for his -3 so I could use those stocks (I collect nicely-figured ones). I have another -4 and it also has a round butt but I have heard of -4s with a square butt (early ones, I guess), so I suppose either type is possible.

I have two -4's and they both came with rubbers. My -3 was a SB with targets.

I just bought a 686 with a 4" barrel this afternoon.

When I got home and started checking things, I discovered my Model Number is 686-6. The web site indeed shows a 686-6, and it's specs is a 4" barrel.

Now I see this thread with a Model Number 686-4. I'm a little confused.

jnichols2; the -4 means that it's a 686 but with changes from the original 686 so that it is now a 686 with configuration #4. Yours is up to configuration #6 if it has a -6 after the 686. It doesn't have anything to do with barrel length. It could be a 4" barrel or a 6" barrel or, etc. on the 686 dash whatever. I think that is what you're asking, but forgive me if I'm stating the obvious to you. I may have misinterpreted your question.

I just found that (dash numbers) on Google.
Yes, I thought -4 was 4", and -6 was 6".

No longer confused.

Thanks.
