Any idea how many 686-4 Plus Quad Port Performance center guns were produced?

I had one for a few years and remember trying to nail that down myself and finding they were only made one year, but I can`t remember if I ever came up with a concrete number of how many. I think it has to be 500 or less though no more of them than you see pop up for sale. I`m just not big on ported guns and let mine go after I came up with an engraved pre lock 2 1/2" 7 shot 686.

I agree, it's probably a very limited production run. Many of those limited runs are in the 500 range unless they're for Lew Horton or another popular distributor. And I think that's especially true for ported revolvers...some people love them and some people hate them. I haven't been able to dig up how many were made, or with what barrel lengths, but I'll bet they're fun to shoot.

I have a very unique Lew Horton 686-3 Competitor/Hunter that has quad porting from Magna-Port. Went down quite the rabbit hole on several forums and called S&W direct as well trying to pinpoint its history since ive never seen one with quad-porting, only dual-porting. Found out my gun was a Lew Horton special released in 1991. S&W was able to tell me that about 400 total guns were made between 1991, of which 200 had porting. Some came with fluted cylinders, others with un-fluted cylinders. It can get quite maddening to figure this stuff out since Lew Horton is closed and their main historian has passed away. I've been meaning to pay the $50 to get the letter from S&W but have been dragging my feet. Best bet would be to call S&W with a serial or model number and they can give you some info.

If we are talking about the 686-4. 2 1/2” quadraport, there is one currently for sale on GB. The ad claims they have a letter, and 350 were made.
Search for magnaport and you should find it

One thing odd about the factory letter in the Gunbroker ad, it states that gun is product code 170071, but the Smith book and the end label on the one I own say 170077. I don't even see a 170071 in the book. FYI

Factory letters are not infallible.
