I picked up a 2.5" -5 in excellent condition, with box & papers, for $550.00 out the door about a year & a half ago.
If it would have been $950, even confirmed NIB, I would have passed and waited until something else came along.

That sounds way to much to me for that gun...just depends on how bad you want it and how much you want to spend. I only paid $550 for my 686-5 mountain gun a few years back. Others will turn up much cheaper than that one.
Are you collecting or looking for it to shoot. I'd buy a new model for a lot less, a holster and a bunch of ammo with the rest of the money.

I agree with the other posters...sounds like too much to me. Believe me, I'm not above "reaching" on a gun that I really want, but for a relatively common gun like the 686 (even prelock) you should be able to do better. Lightly used is just as good as NIB for a shooter!

I can buy a new one for $675......I just checked GunGenie, they have them in stock. If I hated the lock(which in reality doesn't bother me at all) I'd remove it myself for nuttin'. Then I'd shoot the 'ell outta it cause of the lifetime warranty that comes with being the original owner. That may not always be true with a second hand gun even if it is NIB. S&W's lifetime warranty reads for the life of the original owner.....not the life of the gun. If you're pickin' it up as a collector, it's so over priced, you will wait a long time to realize any profit, unless you really need that specific model for your collection.

I agree to much money.
I sold a like new 686-5 2.5 inch 7 shot, about a year ago for $625. 900+ is way too much.
