I put a S&W 686-5 on layaway to give my son for Christmas. It has CEF8904 engraved in it. Does that sound like the serial number? It is supposed to be a 2000 model.

There is a "CEF" code that does correspond with the year 2000 according to "Standard Catalog or Smith and Wesson" Fifth Edition.
