I have a 686-6, serial number cxv8652. I was wondering if earlier versions parts will interchange, barrels, hammers, triggers etc? I've shot the barrel out, very little rifling left. Any help would greatly appreciated.
Are you sure it's really shot out. S&W does not use traditional broach-cut rifling, it uses electro-chemical machining which produces much shallower grooves, almost like polygons inside the barrel.
Many "earlier" parts will function in your 686. The older hammers with the hammer nose will not interchange because of the change to MIM and the frame mounted firing pin. Standard 686 barrels will be the same.
If you feel as though accuracy is suffering do to a high round count, you could send the gun back and have the barrel replaced. Customer Service would be able to provide an estimate of the costs involved...... 1-800-331-0852.
I feel like an idiot. It's the same as my new 586. I'm wanting to change out the 2.5 inch for a 4 inch anyway. I'm having trouble finding barrels for it. The -5 and earlier parts are more abundant, will they interchange?
I'm wanting to build a more target gun out of this, get the same accuracy as my 586.
I re-barreled my 586 L Comp a few months ago. I sent it back to S&W for the work, which was completed perfectly. I hated the port in front of the dead front night sight. Went to a 4" barrel and love it. The turn around time was quicker than expected, it was about $325. Worth every penny!
