Hi all,

I just acquired a 4" 686-6. Inspecting it when I got it home, I noticed that the barrel marks (both S&W Brand and caliber) appear to be laser engraved on the right side of the barrel rather than roll engraved as appears typical on current production Smiths. Left side of barrel is unmarked. I'm curious if any of you have seen one like this and know its origin. I kind of like it. It's just a shooter but if it's interesting I'd like to know. I've included a lousy phone pic. Thanks! Edit: SN is CEZxxxx

Apparently Smith experimented with laser "roll" engraving for a period of time. It turned out very fortunate for me when I had a Model 617 rebored to build my 327 Fed Mag. The original laser marks polished right off and the correct new ones were laser "cut" right on. The down side is that laser marks are shallow enough to wear off quite easily.
