686-8 6"

Found a 686-8 6" ss revolver that I'm interested in buying. What can you tell me about the 686-8 models? Owner doesn't know year of manufacture; he's not the original owner.

I'm guessing there's no internal lock, judging from this pic. Correct?

No box, no papers, just the gun. Pachmeyer rubber grip. What do you think it's worth?

It is between a 686 and a -4, because it has the separate cylinder stop. The -5 has the frame protrusion for the lug and the -6 has the lock.

$400 would be a great deal, and $550 or so would be at the upper end without the original wood stocks, if that matters to you. These stocks would be better for shooting than the wood ones for most people. Hope this is helpful.

I think you'll find that the dash is actually a 3 and not an 8, and anywhere from 1988-93

Looks nice enough, but you may find the 6" barrel a little nose heavy. As far as value I'd say $400-$450 tops.

You are correct. I asked the seller to take another look, and he confirmed that it is indeed a -3, not a -8.

He's firm at $525, so I think I'll pass on this one.

I would have to see better photos of that gun to be sure but I don't consider that price to be too hateful. It does have a pinned front sight, which is a plus for me as it permits using a nice Patridge like the one on it now for bullseye shooting, which my guns are used for the most, and changing to a red ramp for hunting.

Assuming that it's in excellent shape both mechanically and cosmetically, I wouldn't find that price to be too high -though I probably would try to get it for 500. My opinion only, of course.

I agree. Assuming the gun has no problems, $500 is a fair market price in my area.

$525 is a fair price for that gun if the condition is good or better. If you look at the various auction and sale sites, the prices range from a little higher to a lot higher. I wouldn't let the grips stand in my way. Good luck.

The 686-3 would be $525 to $575 in any shop here in PA. Check the price of a new production unit with the lock and I think you'll agree a clean used one is a value anywhere under $600.

Although I don't really like the 6" barrel, you got a fantastic deal! In Eastern Massachusetts that is a $550-$600 gun all day long. It maybe blasphemy, but the factory targets aren't good stocks either, all mine have factory combat grips.

Could you elaborate? Virtually all mine have the factory targets(mine are the smooth ones), and they fit me almost perfectly. I handled a Smith with the combat grips at a local store, and they didn't fit me. Wouldn't this be a matter of individual preference?
