686 Blued

My local dealer has a blued 686 6-inch square butt for sale. Gun comes with original box, papers, cleaning kit and factor grips. According to him the gun was special issue for the Navy Seals. Beautiful gun but I do not know if it is worth $900 even in 99%. I was thinking it would make a great back up gun when I go hog hunting.


Does anyone know the history of this model? Thanks.

Sounds like a 586 or possibly one of the midnite black 686s. Either way its not worth 900

Search for "Midnight Black" in the forum search [dead link removed], there are plenty of posts on the run of blackened 686's.

686s don't come blued, they're stainless guns. A "blued" 686 is either a 586 or, perhaps, a 686 with some sort of aftermarket refinish.

Cant answer as to the SEAL connection, but I do know S&W has made numerous runs of SS revolvers with a blue like blackened finish for several law enforcement organizations. When I started with the CT State Police in 1981, we were issued model 66's with a factory blackened finish.

Just as a side note, a friend bought one in Midnight Black. I guess that finish does not hold very well.... Grab a 586!
