686 CS-1 Prices...WOW!

If I hadn't been bidding on a few guns in the past two weeks I would have said it was the current madness. I've been out bid on 4 different firearms and I thought I was stretching the price as far as I was willing to go. This may in fact be the new normal...and as one of those fixed income old pharts (smile) I may not be able to afford "normal" anymore.

i picked up a 4" cs-1 from my LGS about a month ago...complete with the rb magna's,box,tools etc.for $600...i'd say i got off lucky

wow...and it's a 4". unreal
The front sight blade doesn't look right... CS-1s came with a narrower 1/10" blade. maybe it's my eyes

This is my CS-1 being discussed (or rather, it used to be). In response to your comments,

1) I just measured the front blade and it measured 1/10"... actually 0.1005". I'll try to post a pic of the measurement.

2) As far as "not in remarkable condition" there were no scrapes or scars in the matte finish and the gun has no discernable wear from firing. My only comments were "seldom fired" and "no damage".

3) With regard to "box and papers" if the gun was ever issued, the box and papers got tossed. The ones that were not issued came with box and papers. I do not know whether this one was issued, it certainly was not carried or shot much if at all. Most of the issued ones, I believe, had the 2M stamp instead of the M stamp but I haven't seen a "rule" yet with S&W that there was not an exception to.

4) Unissued CS1's generally came with RB Magnas, box, and docs. Issued ones came with rubber Pach grips (with and without medallions) and no box or docs. Again, other than the M vs. 2M anomaly, this one looks to have been issued.

Don't know what else to say here.

thanks and sorry, beemerphile...it's my eyes. picture # 18 in the listing is what threw me off

It's Gunbroker! What do you expect?
Wheel guns are hard to find right now. Seems like all the new production is focused on plastic guns and ARs. I do believe things will calm down...eventually.

I've been thinking about selling or trading mine and haven't looked at prices in about a year. This one sold today on GB for $1,150. Not in remarkable condt, no box or papers. Is it just part of the current madness or the new normal?
S&W 686 CS-1 CS1 4 in. .357 Customs Service 357 : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

I'd have to say, current madness. Of course then again, it is a CS-1, for what ever that's worth. They always seem to bring a premium.

Makes me wonder what my cherry 4", 686 no dash is worth, these days...

My step son (or myself for that matter) may have an interest in yours - if affordable. Why not shoot me a PM, or email, w/ some details & a pic or two? I'd be happy to give it some consideration.

I am moving on to other things, and though S&W's remain an interest, I will not consider myself a "S&W collector" going forward. It will be something I used to do. But I want to pass along a caution to the group. If a late comer to the party shows up with a new S&W and wants to show it off here and try to be included in the banter, is he going to hear that it is "unremarkable" and he "overpaid" and "I paid less than half that for mine", or is he going to be welcomed? Prices go up and prices go down. Mostly, over time, they go up but occasionally they get ahead of themselves, like maybe they are now, and a downdraft may be coming. Or it may be the "new normal". No-one knows or we would all be rich from picking stocks. In the stock market they say "don't fight the tape" which amounts to disagreeing with the market. You are fighting the tape. The tape says that is currently what it is worth. Some of you who think that is too much would not sell yours for that, so in effect, you are agreeing with the market. You are just fortunate to have been early. Does the fact that I bought gold at $600 mean it is not currently worth $1,600? Does it matter if I think that to be high, or low? But if I think that to be high and would not sell mine at that price, then I am disagreeing with myself.

The guns I have made the most money on are the ones that I thought I paid a stupid price for when I bought them. The mediocre ones have remained mediocre. If you'd rather have the money than the gun, sell it. If you'd rather have the gun than the money, buy it. But it is not a moral issue, it is a market issue. Tape don't lie.

Be happy you aren't Colt collectors. It takes two N frames to get a Python.

$1,150.00 would have been high for a 3" CS -1 not to long ago. $1,150.00 would have been a joke for a 4" CS-1 6 months ago. I'm glad for the seller that someone really wanted that one.

I hope that what we are seeing now is not the start of the new normal. If it is I'm about out of the buying handguns business: for now;)

Beemerphile, not dissing your gun, description of it or what you got for it. I'm seriously considering selling mine while prices are up. It's the spitting image of yours. By "unremarkable" I only mean it's a used gun, not pristine and the selling price surprised the hell out of me.

Me too. But in a happy way. Tape don't lie.

I resemble that remark. Not that I got the Python to collect, it just had been a while since I had a longer barreled version. So two "under appreciated" N-frames turned into one Colt...Which may do the reverse one of these days- who knows?

SOME of the issued 3 inch 686 CS-1's DID make it out with the original box and papers. :)

I wonder what they will bring? ;)

When I consider the asking prices of around $800, or more, OTD for a current production 686, $1150 for a 4 inch CS-1 doesn't seem out of line at all. Regards 18DAI

I'd say the seller made a huge mistake. Lucky you.

does the "2 M" stamp on a CS 1 automatically mean that it was issued??
