686 grip?

Afternoon

I think (well I do) I need the expertise of the group here.

I am looking for a rubber grip for my 686 (round butt) that covers the blackstrap all the way up.

Maybe a fit like the factory rubber grips, only slightly larger & slightly longer (something like the Hogue rubber over-mold for the RugerGP100)

On another note-- Will the N frame grip fit perfectly or will there be some gapping?

Any suggestion, & of course, pictures would be great.

N Frame won't fit. The Hogue X frame grips are larger, longer, and cover the backstrap. You can even get them in Yellow!

Congratulations on your 686. It is generally regarded by most on here as one of the top revolvers.

So as you seem to know your 686 is an L frame with as you mentioned a round butt. K and L frames use the same size grip. N frame grips are a little different size although if you want to modify it you might be able to get it to work.

I have been happy with Pachmayr grips. I have some Pachmayr Decelerators on my N frame and some Pachmayr Grippers on my J frame. I also tried some large Pachmayr Presentation grips on my N frame but they were a little large for my hand. On my L frame I have some Uncle Mikes Round to Square Conversion grips that I am quite fond of. All of these cover the backstrap. I believe the standard rubber grips that most new S&W revolvers are currently shipped with also cover the backstrap except for the Hogue Monogrip which leaves a large part of the backstrap uncovered.

edited to add: I forgot about the X frame grip as others have mentioned above. Yes these fit the K and L frames although I feel they are rather large depending on your hand size.

Thanks, I have had this 686 for a long time now so it's not a new-to-me gun.

I have been shooting it with the stock rubber grips & with lighter loads (probably 4000 rounds) so far through it & that has worked OK.

They just added a revolver (only) class at my local bowling pin shoot so I want to work up a heavy hitting load. Therefore I would like to try a rubber grip with a little more hand isolation.

Great, these appear to be what I am looking for (they look close to my Ruger Hogue grips).

Any chance you can measure from the center (height wise) of the front face of the trigger to rear of grip directly back & inline with center of trigger?

I have only medium size hands and these grips fit me well. I have them on three guns that I use/have used in competition - the 586 pictured previously, a 646 and a 625-8PC. These grips will fit all (K, L, N & X) round butt frames.

Rather than measure as you stipulated, I measured along the path normally defined by your trigger finger using a high hold (as it should be). They greatly mitigate the recoil impulse.

I use mostly Hogue these days, and I prefer a grip that makes for a shorter reach to the trigger, therefore, I do not like the backstrap covered all the way up.

Pachmayr's Presentation grip completely covered the back strap, and they had so many requests for a smaller grip that they came out with the Pro line of grips back in the 80s if I recall. The Gripper Pro and the Compac Pro both have exposed back straps.

Only folks with larger hands can manage the covered back strap as it places the heel of the hand further from the trigger, which means less leverage, and therefore less control, of the trigger in the DA mode of shooting. Less control means more wild shots, especially at high speed.

Be that as it may, if you really do require a covered back strap, then Herrett's Jordan Trooper is what you need in wood. In Pachmayr, the Presentation grip has a covered back strap, but I do not think they are made for a round butt frame. You might look at the Pachmayr Gripper (not the Gripper Pro) to see if it is made for a round butt L frame. Basically, in the Pachmayr line, if it has "Pro" attached to the name, the back strap is exposed.

Good luck. The number of people with hands that are truly large enough to properly use a grip with a covered backstrap is so small, it is difficult to find such grips in mass produced rubber form as the mold cost is simply too high.

An N frame grip will not work on your revolver. Do not try it. As Pizza Bob recommends, look at something made for the X frame.

My hands aren't large enough to use grips which cover the back strap for DA shooting. Furthermore, I find that I get blisters using rubber grips. A wood grip that fills the palm of my hand mitigates recoil better than rubber. The wood slips just enough to avoid creating blisters.

Ahrends grips fill that role better for me than Hogue. They are smooth, and the palm swell is gradual and allows a higher grip. The back strap is uncovered. The new model Ahrends grips are flat in front to facilitate indexing. ( take a little wood off the ridge behind the trigger guard, to save the skin on my knuckle from .44 Magnum recoil.)

If you want something to cover the backstrap, you should look at Herrett grips. The Jordan Trooper is one style, and this (Custom Shooting Master Gun Stock) is another. There are also grips with thumb rests and wrist support in the Herrett line. See also Nils Grips.

That measurement will work as a comparison to what I have but my trigger finger is a bit lower more straight forward.

My current (factory) grip is about 2-7/8" (per your measurement method) so the grip you show should be about perfect for me.

I hate to buy a finger cut-out grip without trying first as usually my finger placement does not match the grip placement but I guess I have no choice as none of my local dealers have that S&W grip.

Thanks for the info-- I am really looking for a blackstrap covering grip as full house .44 mag loads in this light model 69 start to bite after 50-75 straight shots.

That S&W grip that Bob posted looks about perfect for me. Looks a lot like the large Hogue that is on my Ruger GP 100 & I reach the trigger on that just fine.

You can look on Ebay for an Uncle Mike's boot grip for K/L Frame. They have been discontinued. I don't like or use rubber grips, but they seem to fit your criteria and can be inexpensive. But since they have been out of production the prices have gone up.

I am looking for a little more hand filling size that has a bit more give in the rear.
