686 help

[DZH]

I need some help or maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I do not anything about revolvers. I think I want a S&W 686 but there are so many 686's.

I think I have it down to 686 no dash or a 686 plus in a 4" barrel.

Any help would be grateful

They're all great revolvers. For more choices, look at the dash variations.
Many consider the -4 to be the choicest as its the last made with forged parts. Also has the frame factory drilled for mounting an optic if you choose.
The -5 has MIM parts and no lock.
-6 onwards have the internal lock system.
Mine's a -5 7-shooter. I have no problem with MIM parts and its tight as a tick:

People that worry about MIM parts wear belts AND suspenders.

Get the used no dash. One of the last great revolvers that S&W made. Everything after the -4 may be hit or miss. I'm not guessing here. I own eight "L" frames in all the flavors. All no dash, save one -2. The quality is just better. If you really want to hit the mother lode, get an earlier model 27-2 , with the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder. There are plenty of them around also. Good luck.

The 686-4 Plus is a rare bird, if you go that route prepare to have MIM parts and/or the lock, or hunt around for awhile until you can get a -4. I don't have a huge issue with either but it's hard to argue either is an improvement.

If that no dash is really clean that might be the way to go.

Went in to gun shop today. They had one 686. $899. He came down to $825.
I now own a 686 plus 3" non fluted s&w.

Good choice, I made the same one last year. I love the balance of the 3 inch barrel, and it is comfortable to shoot the 357s. Carries well too. Prices sure have gone up!! Enjoy!!

Congratulations! I have been tossing around the idea of getting a 686+ 3" myself. How about some pictures?

I searched online a while back and called several shops and found one finally. Once I got it I realized I didn't like the grey 3-5-7 grips in my hand, even though they looked GREAT. I sold them on Ebay as a buy-it-now for $100, they sold quick !

All I've found is a used one, asking price is MSRP!!! Will keep looking. Yes, I love the looks of the grip but may very well not like how they feel....I hope to get a chance some day to find out
