I inherited a S&W 686 .357. Love the thing. It has a hammer with attached firing pin (one piece). Serial # AYF9xxx. How old is this guy. Should I carry on an empty cylinder due to the firing pin construction ? Any answers appreciated. This is my first post so be nicey.

Welcome to the Forum! The L-frame Model 586s & 686s are very popular revolvers...they are built like tanks and can easily handle any type of .38 Special or .357 Magnum rounds. They were first introduced by S&W in 1980 and many versions are still being manufactured today. A better description (barrel length, markings inside the cylinder yoke recess when the cylinder is open: 686-1, 686-2, type of stocks (wood or rubber), etc., and pictures, would greatly help with identifying your 686. Is there a "686 M" stamped in the yoke area along with the serial number? This would indicate that your revolver was sent back to S&W for some recall warranty work. Anyway, you have inherited a fine revolver...congratulations! I only have one Model 686, but it won't be the last. It's a more modern 3" bbl. 686-6 Plus (7-shot) from 2015, but it's one of my favorite revolvers for OWB carry. Enjoy!

You asked for pictures. This one is a no dash, shipped June 1982, s/n AAF66xx. Stocks replaced by Mr Hogue himself in 1986. And the recall done by Mike Stuckschlager, (old timers will remember him).
