686 Mountain Gun

The last two I saw on gunbroker went for slightly under $1K and slightly over $1k. Lipsey's should have a street price of $750 or so.

I don't care for the lock either but the last two Smiths I bought with an IL have been better made and more accurate than any Smith I bought in the last two decades. I just take the lock out (and keep it in case it needs to go back in). If I had let that stop me I would have missed two of the best Smiths I own.

(BTW, I'm not interested in this model because I liike larger calibers.....but I thought some people might be interested in this.)

Here is a mountain gun, it has a 6 shot cylinder in it right now with a bobbed hammer. They were made with a 7 shot cylinder in the 686-5 Model.

I notice the Lipsey's ad shows it as a 6 shot. As I recall, the previous 686 Mountains were 7 shots. Curious.

Got some bad news for ya scooter. They didn't make a 686 mountain gun with hammer mounted firing pin. It was a -5 gun and the main reason I didn't buy one for $450 NIB years back when they originally came out. (Didn't like that new Cylinder stop or Thumb piece either-but I could always grind down the stop and swap out the thumb piece )

My thoughts exactly. The popularity and scarcity of the 686-5 Mountain Gun must have been seen as something market worthy for a special run, Why change a winner 7-shooter to a 6-shooter? Makes no sense to me, either.

Here's my track on the original:

I have 33 recorded prices for this model gun from $475 to $1063 over a period of 7 Yrs 0 Mos ending January 27, 2010. The average price as of that date was $655. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights all represented as 95% or better, no distinction for import location or engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $932.

mine is a 7 shot and it has a half inch longer barrel than my 44,45 and 41 as for hammer firing pin cant get to it right now its at the back of the safe
