Hello everyone. I have a 686 no dash 4in gun. The 4 shoots fine, but I personally prefer a 6in gun, so I asked a lgs about trading for a 6 in. They didn't have a used no lock gun in Stock, but offered to buy my gun and call if/when they get a 6inch in. They offered 475 for trade on my gun. I think that's a little low. Am I way off? Are the 6 inch guns more valuable/desireable than the 4 inch? Thanks to all that reply

It is not a bad trade-in offer from a dealer, but it would be better to sell yours and put the proceeds toward a 6", or better still trade for one. Your 4" is worth slightly more than a 6" in equal condition.

Yes, I agree with Murphydog, the 4 inch is a more desirable barrel length than the 6 inch. And that was a decent offer from the gun store. For what its worth (and I know it ain't much), I'd try to keep your 4 inch and get the 6 inch when you find it. Heck, having two 686s isn't a bad thing is it?

Your gun looks really clean to me. If the pictures tell the story, I would expect to see it out for $700 - $750. Just look at the prices on the new 686's. You would think they had solid gold barrels. Your gun is worth more than a new one.
loeman got it right. A four inch and sixer is a nice pair. A three inch in the mix isn't bad either. Ask me how I know.

I agree it would be ice to keep the 4 in and get a 6 to go along with it. Given the low trade in value, that's the route I will take unless I happen to run into a six inch even trade. Even if it is a decent deal from a dealer, the gun is worth more than 475 to me. If they do happen to get in a used 6 inch, we'll thank God for layaway at gun stores!!

Remember they are running a business so they need to buy it for $475 .......... so they can sell it for $600+.
IMHO a 4" 686 is the best "all around", only revolver,utility gun in .357 you can have........ a 6" gives you more sight radius for the range and hunting........but gives up "carryability" to the 4"gun.....so if I could have only one it would be a/my 4" 686

Your 686-m looks just like the one I have. I purchased it several years ago, in the box, etc etc.

I did, however, see one that was "new, in box, unfired" - guy wanted $1500 for it. I blanched.
He dropped to $1200. I walked away.
No way in the world I would let it go for $475.

No way I'd give a 4" revolver like that away mate. I'd keep it and find the funds for a 6" gun.

I never sent it back for the recall. The 4 is worth more but the 6 will do as a target gun.

Depending on how you try to sell your pre-lock 4" 686, you should be able to get somewhere in the $600+ range for it. However, I would list it here in the classifieds section as a "trade" item for a like condition 6". As others have suggested, your 4" typically has a higher value than the 6" version, so maybe you can do a deal with someone where you each pay your own shipping/FFL fees and the other person throws in something else like ammo with their 6" to even out the value between the two revolvers so both sides are satisfied. Just a thought?

I would keep the 4" 686 and buy another large frame S&W 357 wih a 6" barrel.

You could get $100 more than that easily selling it yourself and probably more because of the 4" barrel which are in demand. 6" barreled 686s are pretty common. Like somebody said, it's a good offer for a DEALER who has to buy low and sell high, but some individual will most likely want that gun and be willing to pay for it.
Also, I don't like the 'call me when one comes in' thing. I'd wait to see WHAT he got before I traded for it.

As far as the seeing what he got before I traded, that is the only way I could trade. Just to be clear, even though that's not the route I will take, they were offering to either buy the gun at 475 cash and let me know when a 6 inch came in so I could have first shot at it, or I would keep my gun till they got one and then do the trade.
On a side note, they offered similar trade in on a model 60 I have, so I am considering trading in my 60 pro for a new 586 6 inch gun. They would need 250 to 300 on top of my pro series 60, but that gun has failed to impress as far as accuracy is concerned. Thoughts on that trade, 60 pro plus cash for NEW 586 6"?

I absolutely love my 6inch 686 it's such a gorgeous gun you are not a true gun enthusiast until you have revolver I would never sell mine because it was handed down from my father and my grandfather handed down his Smith & Wesson 357's to my dad so we have three generations Smith & Wesson 357's might not sound like a big deal but everybody has their own thing
