I'm in the process of ordering my first S&W revolver. I have Ruger GP100 now but have always wanted the S&W.

Can someone please tell me the difference between the 686 Plus and the 620, both in 4" .357?

Thank you,
Bob

640 in 4"?

Hi Bob,

I can't say that I have seen a 640 with a 4" barrel, but they could exist....the 686 is an L frame (6 or 7 shot) and the 640 is a J frame (5 shot)....the 640 is smaller and can be carried in your pocket if you so choose...the 686, no so much...it is better suited to a holster on your belt. Both are solid as a rock, being stainless steel...both are 357 magnum guns...just size difference - also, the 640 has a concealed hammer, where the 686 is a regular exposed hammer.

Hope that helps

Dramatic differences between a 640 and a 686... Go to a shop or show and compare the two for yourself, and your needs.
I didn't know there was a 640 4", so if that is not a typo, the 4" barrel would be detrimental to the original purpose of a 640, in My Opinion.

I'm sorry, I meant between a 620 & 686 Plus

The 620 isnt being made anymore because of the enjoyment of gun owners having a great time with the 686+ which is a 7 shot or the just plain 6 shot. The 686+ is made in 4 different barrels. 2.5,3,4, and 6 inch barrels. I have the first 3 of them for about 8 years now along with my M10s. The 620 had a 2 piece barrel on it along with the IL lock. The same lock that I have on my 686+s that I own and carry and shoot. I havent had so far any problems with the lock because,I leave it unlocked. CCW carry holster that I have for them is an iwb Uncle Mikes for the 4 inch with velcro strap on it and it fits well and is comfortable. But,,,,,,,, because S&W pricings on revolvers have shot thru the roof, I will and have been buying rugers and used smiths when I can find them. So if you decide, here is my own opinion of them. I,right now would stay with the Ruger GP100 if you want a new one. If you want a S&W, find a good used one that isnt priced out of line like. rz625-8

Thanks very much for the response.

The 620 is still offered in S&W's product line http://www.smith-wesson.com. I have the 686+ with a 4" barrel and love it, but I would not turn my nose up on a 620. Never mind how the barrel is constructed (I'm not a purist) or how long the underlug is (that's up to you). I consider the 620 a kissing cousin of the 686+.

Cordially, Jack

Sorry,my mistake on the 620 not being sold no more. I was wrong. rz625-8. Hope you all accept my apologies.

The only real difference between the 4 inch 686 + and the 620 is the barrel. The 686 + uses a fully lugged one piece barrel. The 620 uses a half lug barrel shroud and a tensioned barrel within the shroud. Because of the tensioned barrel, the 620 is the more accurate of the two. Gunblast did a test of the 620 and with one optimized load, managed a 25 yard grouping of 9/16 inch from a fixed machine rest. That's a grouping a bit under the size of a quarter, so it's a very accurate gun.

However, but guns are capable of far more accuracy than most shooters can achieve. Fact is, if you want to shoot up to the potential of either model you'll probably have to mount a red dot or scope on it and shoot it from a bench rest. Fact is, the sight radius on a 4 inch gun is too short to shoot to the precision that both guns are capable of.

It's also been rumored that S&W will be dropping the 620 from their catalog. From what I have seen on this forum, the reason for this is most likely because there are a lot of old fuddy duddies in the wheelgun fraternity who just don't like change, even when it's an improvement. Yeah, I have a 620.

I'm a big fan of the 686+ (or no plus...doesn't matter to me). I've got a 6" and a 4" and love them both. Now I'm on the hunt for a 2-1/2" or 3" barrelled one to go with them.
