I am thinking about getting a 686 pre-lock, found one in my area for $525 without any box. It has a 6" barrel appears to be fired, hogue grips, its in overall good shape. No major blemishes. I would give it a 92%. Is $525 a good deal?

Around here they go for around $500 with the range being $400 for a low (gun show individual sale) and $600 for a high (dealer)

Prices vary from region to region, but my favorite local shop has an older pre lock 4" in really nice shape in his case. It has been fired, but I would call it an easy 98%, box, no paper, nothing else. Looks very much like a night stand gun with very low round count. It has been in his case at $459 for several weeks. I looked it over real close and was told I could have it for $409 cash if I didn't use plastic or $430 if I did, just because he wants to move it. I just can't warm up to L frames.

Revolvers in general (other that OLD stuff) just don't move around here.

Since it is a "PRE" lock it should be worth $50 buck more than a new one, I think since so many want a pre-lock they should be willing to pay the extra for one without the lock. I wouldn't go less than $600 for it, they are getting hard to find.

I paid $500 for a lightly used no dash 686 with 6 inch barrel last year but I saw several sell for more.

Difficult is impossible to wear one out. What does a new one cost???
I have a 4" 686-4 that I wouldn't sell for less than $600 nor would I buy for more than $500. Your price seems therefore to be in that range.
How bad do you want it????

Reasonable price. I bought three a year and a half ago all in the $490-525 range. If anything, I think prices have held steady or increased a little, in spite of the economy.

I had been looking all over the place for one... and to make matters worse I am in NJ so everything is more expensive. And getting it into the state for elsewhere would have cost me an additional $40-$50. I found one finally day before yesterday. A very nice 686-4 6 shot with a 4" barrel. No box. I paid $650 and I was pleased to do so. I had not seen one for sale online for less than around $575 - of course I am a novice so I may have been looking in the wrong place but I checked the auction sites and various dealers.

It is serial # CCCXXXX - would any kind soul out there with access to that wonderful S&W book be able to tell me when it was made?
