Hello All,

I have my eye on these two 686's with 2 1/2 inch barrels. They both have there original boxes and are in great shape.

I need to get a poll from all of you 686 guys out there and tell me which one is a more preferred run -1 or -3 because I can only afford to buy one.

thank you,

Not a huge amount of difference in the two models.

The -1's were recalled for a change relating to soft primers. They're identified by an "M" in the crane area of the frame. I'd insure that it was repaired. Or, you could send it back to S&W yourself. They'll fix for no cost and shipping both ways.

I agree with Dennis. If the two guns are in about the same condition and the 686-1 has the "M" I'd buy that. But if no "M" get the 686-3 -- less hassle. That said any 2 1/2" 686 would be cool.

All things being equal with the guns...I'd take the -3. The plus is that you will have no bushing issues and it will not have to be returned for the "M" fix if it has not been done already on the -1. I think the only other upgrade was the improved yoke retention system in the -3. I think the -3 would be the better choice.

Better yet....see if the guy can add them together and give you a -4, which many consider to be the best of the 686 batch.:D

I tend to like the early versions of the models I buy. No real reason other than that is what I like. So, with all things even (and the -1 has the "M" stamp), I'd go with the "-1". My 686 is a "no dash" with "M" revisions and she shoots like a dream! Either one would be a great .357!!
