What is a reasonable price range for a used (excellent condition) Model 686? I don't know if it is "undashed", or if it has original box and purchase docs; has original wood grips, 4" barrel. Thanks for any advice.
 
I'd say around $400. - $450. Depending on where you're at !

Thanks for the replies; a LGS in Fredericksburg, VA is asking $699.99.
 
Same prices in my area. $400 to $450. With a IL probably a no sale.

IMHO, for that price it would need to be a darn nice gun in a very desirable configuration with box and paperwork (no dash 3 or 4" for example).

A new 4" 686 plus (or even something like a Talo 3") can be had for slightly over 700 bucks. If new is something you'd consider.

These are easily 600 dollar guns all day long where I am at. 500-550 is a bargain and at that price they don't last long. Good luck.
 
I have a 686-3 6" purchased new in 1993. Stupid me accidently bumped the extractor rod on the work bench last time it was cleaned and bent it. I called S&W on the way to Omaha from Denver yesterday and have a new rod and centerpin on the way for <23.00 bucks. It is such a sweet shooter , built like a tank and is priceless to me.

Last night I went to Bass Pro in Council Bluffs,IA and they had a new
4" for $799.99...I'd buy a low use , pre lock for the same $ but would not sell the same for $1K. Just my .02 cents...the damn things are tough (ugh...bumping that extractor rod made me mad at myself!).
 
In my neck of the woods there aren't any S&W revolvers of any kind and I have to buy them online if I want one.
 
No or early dash 650-750 later dashes 500-600. The only reason no or early dashs have a tad more value is because of the no machined parts and lock, in no way are the no or early dashes better performance wise. The 686 is a great 357 mag model.

Nobody is finding 686s for 400-475. Some people just like to claim they can get a specific gun cheap.

You don't have enough info for us to even wager a guess.
 
Well folks I'm not saying what I saw was the norm and I didn't look at the piece closely since I'm not shopping for one,but that was the asking price at a gun show! ;) that was here in the good old state of PA. :)
I guess then I could have called this my deal of the day!
Sometimes what one pays in the west is not being paid in the east!
I know I just paid $400. For a really nice Ruger Security Six, so what are they selling for in your neighborhood?

Pa. gun shows are strange...... mostly junk (at this end of the state)...... a few nice overpriced pieces...... and every once in awhile........a 4" 686/586/681 sitting forgotten on the end of some guys table at "it must be broken price".....strange but true......over the last 5years I've found one of each of the guns listed at a "I can't leave it here price"

To the OP.......$600 and up is the norm...... course you don't see many for sale!

Anybody in this hobby for a few years who buys a few guns a year has probably gotten a bargain or two or more but that certainly doesn't become the "normal price" for that item. In a Central Illinois gun show, a $450 686 would either be gone in 2 minutes or else the side with the blown out chamber would be resting on the table unseen until the gun was picked up. I am also certain that a few have sold for that price.
 
BAM-BAM, you are correct with gun shows on this side of the state as well and revolvers around here are as scarce as hens teeth! But I must say that some of the prices I've seen posted here have not been the norm around here unless it is in super excellent condition with all papers, tools and box. ;)
That 686 that I mentioned did not look bad from what I remember but I didn't handle it.

Down here in Central VA I felt fortunate to get a 6" Model 686 (no dash, no M) in excellent condition for $550 without the grips. This was a in a "friends and family" deal a bit over a year ago, so you can adjust accordingly. For the record, I wanted a set of finger groove smooth combats (SB) which were an appropriate option for that gun, so getting it without grips was not too bad a burden. The same friend later came up with the grips I wanted and treated me right on them.
