I own a nickel model 19 P&R with a 6" barrel. Out to 25 yards i'ts as accurate as my 8 3/8" Model 27 which is pretty darn good. It's size and weight puts it comfortably between my Model 27 and my 4" Ruger SP-101. There are a few things I would change on the m19 to make it suit me even better but i don't want to alter a nice P&R gun. So I was thinking about maybe getting a non P&R model 66 with a 6" barrel and having it modified for me by a competant shop. I would like a replacable front sight, cylinder cut for moon clips, and the frame altered to a round butt which is actually very comfortable in my hands. Not everyones ideal but I keep my guns forever typicaly so I don't care. On the other hand for the same or less money i could get a model 686+ pro 5" which already has all of those features and holds one extra round. I live out in BFE which means that there are no shops close by where I could handle a 686 of any kind. The weight of the two revolvers looks like it is probably almost exactly the same. I don't know how well the 686 balances though or if it would be as accurate with the 5" barrel as the K model is with a 6" barrel. Would sure like some feedback on the 686+ pro. I thought about an SSR but it's too close to the SP101 and I don't want to overlap too much. I even considered a round butt 4" M66 but again, it's too close to the SP I already have and I don't want to lose the accuracy I have with the m19.

The 686 Pro has a lot going for it, especially if your changing the front sight, and mooncliping the cylinder. It seems also that a mooncliped 7 shot gun reloads easier than the 6 shot cylinder. The 5" guns are a nice compromise.
For a couple bucks more, have you thought about a 986?, or do you want to stick with the 38/357.

yeah, i'd like to stay with the 357. It's a great all around cartridge and as cheap to reload as 9mm also.

Definitely get the 686+ pro. No reason to molest a model 66 when Smith made the L frame just for guys who want to shoot .357 in competition. Magnums are tough on a K frame, so if your shooting more .357 than .38's than get the L frame and save the K frame for someone who will appreciate it as it is.
