Is the 7 shot as good as the six shot, any problems with timing, ect. Any info will be appreciated. Thanks

686+ -4

No problems with mine. No reason to think there might be, either. After all, you can buy 5, 6, 7, 8, and 10 shot revolvers from S&W- I think they've got this one figured out.

2Hawk, Thanks
I never shot a 686+, I talked to a guy at a gun show a couple of years ago and he said when the 686 7shot revolvers first came out they had some problems with the timing.

Did the 686+ have it's own series and start at
-1 or start at -4 in the 686 line up?

No problem with them at all, they are a nice gun. I have two of them, a 5inch and a 7inch.

I have a 686+-4 in 4" and a 686+ in 6" I had them both moon clip converted and they really suck up those moon clips great. better than my 8 shooter and my 6 shooter. they would be the last guns I would get rid of.

In theory they should be better then a six shot because the cylinder lock because of spacing for seven shots is in a meaty part of the cylinder and the metal is thicker. I can't see timing ever really being an issue, I mean after all the mechanics are exactly the same as every other revolver Smith ever made.

Great gun. Herb Belin of S&W said the 686+ is stronger than the 6 shot 686 due to locking notches being offset between charge holes in the thickest part of the steel rather than over the thinnest part of the charge hole as in the 6 shot cylinder. All of the ones I have examined have perfect timing.

I had a 6 shot before getting a 7 shot, sold the 6 shot. I like the 7 better. Personal preference. The 6 was a -3, the 7 is a -6. The 6 was w/o a lock and firing pin on the hammer. The -6 has a lock and a flat hammer. I like the -6 better.

Have a 686+ 4". It looks pretty solid. I've fired the gun alot no hint of any trouble. very smooth very accurate.

Thanks everyone for all the info and the pictures. I went ahead and picked up the 686+
I like the older smith & wesson's without the internal lock. This one has night sights and is a RB. I'll try to post a picture later.

Have the 686+ Mountain Gun, great holster gun. Thought of carrying it on duty just for the extremely remote possibility that I might meet a BG who counts shots, then disregarded the concept. But it still is a great duty/woods gun, bought several speedloaders for it figuring they might not be available forever, the also fit my "Mountain Light", which will definitely get your attention with heavy magnum loads, but carries like it is not there. Unfortunately they only came with the lock, but I gritted my teeth cause the price was right-possibly from another lock hater.

I personally know of three that left the factory with the timing off mine was one of them. They had to change the cylinder, and hand on mine to make it right. It is fine now.

S&W's first revolver, the Model One, made from 1857 to 1860, was a 7-shot. The 686+ is S&W returning to their roots after a long daliance with 6-shots.

Hey Revolver King.
About how much does it run to cut the 686+ for clips?
Who did it for you?
Thanks, Pete
