Just bought a 686 6" on Gun Broker with the silhouette front sight. Is there any special way to sight it in? If it is sighted in at 25 yards for the tallest front sight setting at what range will the other three be sighted in for. I realize that there are many variables due to ammunition used. Just wondering what the theory is. Should have it Monday can't wait to get this one out and shoot it.

Any help on this would be appreciated. I have never seen a silhouette front sight Smith before except of course on the auctions sites. Are these fairly uncommon? When where they discontinues? Someone put a yellow insert on the front sight. Is there any source for a new front sight blade?

Not sure if the sight is same as you have but I have a 29 with 10-5/8 barrel. The front site has four numbered adjustable elevation screws. You can use any number for any load or distance you choose you just have to remember what one goes with your selection.

I like the view down this sight better than any of my other Smiths so I wouldn’t change anything until you give it a real chance.

I have a 29-3 6" with the 4 Position front sight, As Rocket 3 mentioned, you can adjust any one of the positions for any particular distance. My recollection is that you need to adjust the rear sight to a midway elevation. Then adjust the sight usually position 1 for the closest then Position 2, then 3, etc. I believe it was originally intended for Silhouette shooting and just click up for each distance. It could also work for PPC shooting if you use a center hold. It can also be helpful in the hunting field for various distances you select.
