Use whichever you are better with...by that I mean which you can get into action fast, with an accurate first shot, and can send numerous accurate follow-up shots down range in a hurry. Quick and accurate beats the caliber debate every time.
686+ vs 1911 in SHTF scenario

1911. I'm covered either way since I got rid of all my fans.
Have you ever seen someone who has practiced reload with a speed-loader? These guys are just as fast as most people can reload an auto.
All it takes is practice.
Come on man, be real. I love my wheel guns, but most normal humans don't have the time or the fortitude to "practice" enough to reload a revolver as fast as a semi. Sure it's possible, but is it likely? No. Is it remotely likely? No.
My first impulse was to post that if TSHTF I don't want S on my fine revolvers so I'd rather have my rattiest 1911ish foreign automatic out. I did think of one tid bit that might interest the O.P.
I suggest leaving 686 moon clips for action pistol or other matches. They are much thinner than moon clips for rimless cartridges which makes them too easily bent. Main spring energy gets wasted flattening bent clips resulting in missfires.

I wouldn't feel under armed with either one but if the 1911 is good in the military field for more than a 100 years, it's good enough for me. At least they worked good in Banzai charges.
Of course a 686 Plus with some speed loaders or cut for moon clips would be a really close competitor.

I would go with my Model 686 Plus because I can shoot it accurately and I don't own a 1911 :>).

Ummmm - they already have. I live there once. Then came the 10 day wait, along with a no more than one per 30 days....
Then came the "you can keep them, but you must register each for $25" (5 per card as I remember)...
Then came the "as of Jan 1 next year, you can't ever buy these again because they shoot down commercial airliners"......so I bought one a few weeks before Jan 1 just because...
Then I moved.....

Too many variables to consider - ammo availability now vs down the road, reliability in long term, magazines v being able to load directly from pocket/pouch after mags/moons/speed loaders have been lost, etc. I'd be more included to say 686+ and a Glock 19.
I'm not into apocalyptic fantasies.
Most of us aren't either...... but what would call being in New Orleans or anywhere on the Gulf coast after Katrina?
I would have wanted a concealed carry firearm.....

Point well-taken. However, they have yet to try to take them all through confiscation. The DOJ said they believe that less than 15 percent of all of the "assault weapons" were registered back in 2000. Non-compliance is a foregone conclusion.

FWIW, revolvers (and lever action rifles) don't require magazines. As long as you have ammo, you can keep them loaded. Less to worry about, less gear to lug around. Speedloaders/strips are helpful and do speed up reloading, but not really required to keep the gun running. Just a little something to think about.
I don't really give SHTF-type situations much thought, though. Especially since I only have a 642. I do keep a half-dozen or so speedloaders handy.

I Googled "tactical lever action rifle" and came across it. It's a customized Marlin lever action. Here's the site:

I don't have any experience with lever actions or this company so I can't comment on the quality of the work, but I agree that it's an interesting application for a lever action rifle.

SHTF is deteriorating into an apocalypse and famine. For that I keep half price fast food restaurant coupons in the glove box. So far I have survived.
It depends what you mean by SHTF. I don't really get involved in most of the fantasy doomsday prepper type scenarios, but if we are talking about a short term Katrina or social unrest/Riot type of situation, I'd want a light, easy concealable high capacity 9mm(Glock) and a small hideaway revolver(J-frame). At home, the handguns would still probably play a primary role although long guns could factor in as well albeit limited IMO as the need to immediately go mobile would likely be high. SHTF conjures up images of dicey situations. I'd hate to drop and loose a magazine. I'd be out of luck from then on out.
And if Im out of ammo, I hope I can find some that feeds in my 1911 properly.......

You would be well served with either, especially if you have a 12 gauge or AR type rifle as well.
A 9mm semi auto will serve you well too.

I love revolvers. I have two 357's and some others. My shtf piece though is a 1911 with 12 loaded mags at the ready. When the shooting starts that's whats going with me. That and an M1 carbine with the same number of loaded mags. If it's good enough for a D day invasion it's good enough for this ya hoo.

Talk to police armorers from the 60s and 70s, a revolver is more likely to be put out of service under rough conditions and heavy use than popular wisdom has it. They are also harder to fix and parts less common. Meanwhile with all but expensive flash suppressed ammo a .357 is loud and lights up the night.
1911s....they make work for armorers too... Do you have an armorer? The bigger problem is the gun and ammo are heavy.
My suggestion - Glock 19 or 34, your choice as to more concealable or loner sight radius.
In full disclosure, I have lived in urban conditions that a sheltered suburbanite would find apocalyptic. I carried a semi custom alloy frame Commander size .45 as my primary slash favorite.

Both choices are great. But with Glocks Ubiquitous with LE and Private Citizens, they would be my first choice. I know, I know, it's a weak round, but I love my Glock 19. And my Octane 9 suppressor.

Go to the range and try this: With a standard paper plate at 3, 5 and 7 yards shoot the gun empty as fast as possible, reload & repeat. The choice comes down to which weapon allowed you to keep all the shots on the paper plate.

I have 2 rifles in 357 Magnum, so the answer is rather obvious. I would choose the 357 Magnum revolver.

It would depend on time. My 1911 is my quick-access firearm. My trusty target .357 is 10 minutes to get to.
If I had to run, it will be a 1911 commander size, a shield 9, and a .308 Scout. With a small ammo box of those calibers (yes, the mags are all loaded so range trips are easy to pull off). Three minutes extra, the Ruger .22 gets added.
But I would have to say that for me, to leave my small corner of the world, where we all look out for each other, and go out in the wild that my part of town would become, does not make sense. If I can't see a mushroom cloud, I'm sitting tight. I'm an old dead guy anyway, have to protect the young folks as I can.
So I'd say a trusted handgun and a good, easy to carry, rifle.
