Welcome to the Forum. A lot you can learn here! I have a 586 no dash from 6/83. It is the same as the 686, except blue version. They are great shooters! Enjoy your 686! Bob

Are there any advantages to having any of the dash models vs the no-dash?

Well, in the 686 models, after a particular engineering change (dash whatever), a mechanical issue or two may have been perfected.

With that said, most S&W 'buffs prefer the no dash guns to any of the dash/numbered models.

All the pre-lock, pre-MIM L-frames are great in my opinion. The no dash and -1 L frames did have the firing pin recall issue that is well documented. The importance of sending in for the recall sounds like it is debatable since many people did not and have not had any problems. If the recall work was done, the factory applied an "M" stamp near the model number. Starting with the -2 the problem was corrected. That is the ONLY (potential) down side of a no dash vs a -2 or -3.

From what I understand, with preference for the no dash comes the 686-4. All the "good" engineering changes have been made before they implemented MIM parts and the frame mounted firing pin.
I have heard that some later dash 4 models have MIM thumb latches though.

Thanks ya'll, for your input. This a great place to learn.
