Gentlemen, I have a 686 that I bought used in a pawn shop over twenty five years ago. It is a absolute honey and it has a home here forever. But, I was wondering. This 686 is a dash 0, Sn AAC 66XX and I understand that S&W did not have any short barrel 686's tell the dash 3 version. This has a square butt which makes it somewhat hard to carry. This 868 has the M mod so I know it has been back to S&W sometime in it's history. A letter is not worth it to me but I wish I knew how it left the mother ship. Was wondering if all the short barrel 868's were round butt guns.

I would say 1986.

There were no square butt 2.5" barrel guns, the barrel was likely swapped in the past.

I would agree in the general sense, however during that time. Smith and Wesson were not wasting anything they cleaned the parts bins out and assembled guns and sent them out to different distributors, it was also a way to quietly test the market. I have a 686-1 that is a round butt 6 inch with a high Polish finish that was a special order gun you would not know this without a letter, chances are that it was swapped out, but if it was a factory special order it would be a unique piece and if it's in the condition that the gentleman claims it would be worth investigating in my mind anyway.
Pictures would be nice with as much detail as you can get in them.

Never seen a "dash o" that being said letter it. Letter will add a certsin amount of value no matter what the info. And will resolve any questions. Unless it doesn't letter. JMHO....Good Luck no matter your decision.
