Guess this reply would be more in the nature of a "bump" because I've been looking at one myself. I am torn because I've got a 66-7 and a 67 which both, especially the 66, work just great for IDPA.....but think the SSR looks way cool and would be slightly more durable over the long-haul, theoretically anyway.

I think that if you don't have a decent IDPA SSR revolver on-hand, that one would be sweet.

They look pretty cool, I like the barrel contour, but you should be able to find a good used 681 or 686 too, and w/o the lock if that's an issue to you (doesn't particularly bother me). The underlug does help control rise in rapid fire. I found a really good 681 recently for $250, as solid as the come.

I had one and enjoyed it until I was seduced by a 66 no-dash. I liked the SSR, it's a fine gun. But, a couple of weeks ago, I was at a show and saw a NIB 66 no dash. Love at first sight. So, I bought the 66 and then, sold the SSR. It's purely subjective, I know, but the 66 simply feels more comfortable when I'm shooting it. And, also for reasons that are subjective and probably unique to me, I can shoot the 66 more accurately than I could the SSR. It's certainly not the gun -- the SSR is by all accounts, a very accurate gun and, occasionally, I'd get wonderful, tiny groups with it -- but I just seem to be able to shoot my "new" 66 more consistently.

My SSR is no better/worse than a standard 686. The barrel contour is different, but I still had to have the action worked on to make it shootable. It's very accurate, but then so is a regular 686. If you like the SSR barrel, you won't regret buying one. The wood grips that come with it are nice looking, but didn't fit my hand, so I just use the rubber ones. YMMV.

I had my pusher order me one when I first heard of it - 4/07. He finally got it in a year ago - I was writing a check for his price + s/t when he upped it $80. I tore up the check - fondled it again - and left. The wood grips felt like coarse sandpaper in the stipling - very uncomfortable. They'd have to go... it was too much moola, and the trigger was 'factory' feeling.

Last spring found me back at his lair - he had the new-for-'08 4" 627 Pro. It came with some nice features - pre-dished for moonclips, spring-loaded front sight (Comes as an orange ramp - mine is a HiViz now), same contoured lug & barrel as the 686SSR. The kicker - it was the same MSRP $964 as the 686SSR - and marked $719. It was a no-brainer to me. Fantastic revolver - I did try a few grips before ordering the Miculek grip - I honestly like the feel, although they may find their way to my other 627, a JM PC-shop V-Comp. The 627 Pro comes with the usual open back Hogues... I have a drawer full...

Just a consideration... same money... N-frame 8-banger.

I have had one for some time now.
Only lock S&W revolver that I own so far.
I own other md10,64,66 no lock and I think all triggers and actions are remarkable.
Pricing at gunshows here have been 669.00 nib for SSR.

I had a 686 and loved it. 6 inches of stainless steel barrel and rubber grips that I actually liked (rare occurrence for me). Shot like a dream. Would love to get another one to have as a .357 DA revolver. I have a Taurus 66 and it's OK, but the workmanship is not the same as a 686 or even a Ruger GP 100.

The 627 is a no-doubt nice gun, I've got one myself (except mine is a 5") and love it, but they aren't legal for IDPA, even in 4", because they hold 8 shots.

I love my 686SSR. I think the barrel shape is unique and always draws interest among shooters. I don't really think I shoot any better than other revolvers I own. The wood grips are gorgous but hurt my hand like hell when shooting so now it has Houge fingergroove rubbers.
Is the extra price worth it? Probably not. But it is a special S&W.

I like mine very much, the contour of the barrel moves the balance point back a bit and it handles and points very well. It like most "L" Frames is very accurate. It is virtually identical to my 646 and the Kydex Holster I had made for the 646 fits the SSR perfectly. You can't go wrong with it.
