I liked the S&W Model 39 what back in the day, but it never really offered any improvement over what I already had. I never enjoyed shooting the Model 59, as it just didn't fit me well. As a result I've more or less ignored the centerfire S&W semi-auto pistols ever since.

However, this weekend I came across a table at a local gun show that had a pair of 6906s and a half dozen or so 5903s in various conditions. The 6906s looked like they didn't see much time outside a holster, and I figured for $299 I couldn't go to far wrong. I ended up buying this one, a narrow trigger, round trigger guard model that dates from what I'd estimate to be the first half of 1997. It has some holster wear but is in excellent mechanical condition

I found another table with a two 6906 magazines for $25 each, and made a deal for $40 for both of them.

I was pleasantly surprised at the range as it was pleasant to shoot, even with my self defense load, and recovered much better under recoil than I'd expected from a 25.75 oz (31.5 oz loaded) 9mm pistol.

I was afraid the long DA pull and fairly long trigger reset would be a problem for double taps and failure to stop drills, but it really wasn't and while it's not 1911 fast, it's pretty close.

It isn't the most accurate 9mm pistol I own, and in fact it's near the bottom, but it's still acceptably combat accurate - a 9 ring pistol rather than a 10 ring pistol at 10 yards.

As an added bonus the same Glock 19/23/26/27 holster that I use for my CZ-75 Compact fits the 6906 like a glove. It is also quite comfortable to carry.

Great guns...... and you got in near the bottom of the market. I generally carry a single stack 3913 but if I want 12+1 well..... it's hard to find a better compact hi-cap.

Now I lucked out on my latest ...... last week for $265...... there were a couple of 6906 threads last week..... SCS&W lists the 6906 at $500 for Exc. and $375 for VG

Sorry but your losing me when you talk about long trigger reset. Has yours been modified to double action only? I own several 3rd gen Smiths and all have very short and crisp resets when the gun goes into single action.

BB57,
You scored a great deal on that 6906. MSCampbell is right, the first round on the 3rd Gen's has a long travel--they were designed that way. But the second round is single action and is as fast as you'd like it.If you polish your feed ramp with jeweler's rouge and a Dremel, your defensive ammo will feed smoothly. Last but not least, despite what owner you are or how old it is, anything goes wrong, ship it to Springfield and they will repair. I speak from experience. Just remember to get a ticket number and call politely but regularly.
Just my $.02

I have the SCS&W on my Kindle Fire and I generally take it along to gun shows to look up stuff I might be interested in.

I've also learned over about 30 years about the value of jumping in when there are surplus guns all over the place. They dry up sooner or later and prices rise.

I should have been more specific about the context or my frame of reference.

It's a standard SA/DA trigger. The reset on it compares very well to my Hi Powers or my CZ 75s which do not reset quite as crisply, but it's long compared to the triggers on my 1911s - and the 1911 is the gold standard I reference when it comes to double taps, etc.

As I said, I was pleasantly surprised at how well the re-set performed given that it an SA/DA design.

Need info on night sights for 6906. Brownells is overpriced. Thanks

BB57 didn't mention this - but I think his 6906 would be eligible for Trijicon's $57-to-relamp deal - if it came with Trijicon night sights. Being a police trade-in, I assume it did but we all know what assume spells ... ;)

I've got a PD 6906 and a PD 5946 without night sights, for whatever that's worth.

My 6906 has the standard low profile Novak 3 dot sights. S&W cataloged the night sight equipped model as the 6906-NS.

It's comfortable to carry however, and I shoot it well, so I am considering adding a set of night sights since I prefer night sights on my concealed carry handguns.

The Trijicon SA24 is the Novak tritium sight set for the 6906 and Trijicon sells it for $125.

I carried a Model 6906 for a couple of decades before retiring from le. In spite of thousands of rounds fired, much of it with cheap agency reloads, that little pistol just keeps trucking along. I have many pistols to pick from but the one I trust the most is it. You got a great buy on a great pistol!

These are pics of my 6906 polished trigger job, new springs, magnaport. I would put this up against any modern pistol for quality and reliability.
